The Ames test has been widely used to assess the mutagenicity of herbal products, including for example extracts from Calendula officinalis L., Echinodorus macrophyllus (Kunth) Micheli, Mouriri pusa Gardner, Phyllantus orbicularis Kunth, Punica granatum L., Parthenium hysterophorus L. and a green tea catechins preparation (Ramos et al, 1998(Ramos et al, , 2001Sanchez-Lamar et al, 2002;Santos et al, 2002;Nohynek et al, 2004).
