PurposeAmidst the complicated nature of the UAE’s facilities management (FM) industry, the need to recalibrate the existing performance measurement (PM) system measures and criteria has been resonating to ensure their ability to capture the FM industry trends and dynamics, thus enhancing organizational excellence. Therefore, this research aimed to propose a specific PM tool to the country’s FM industry to accurately assess performance and establish strategic enhancements.Design/methodology/approachThe study reviewed literature on the available PM systems to gather the available measures, which were presented to a focus group of seven participants, who were purposively selected based on their expertise in FM and PM implementation in the UAE to adjust them and add ones relevant to the UAE’s FM industry.FindingsThe focus group conducted various changes, from retaining certain measures and criteria, renaming them to simplify or make them more representative of the industry, ranking them based on their importance to limit their numbers, to finally categorizing them as enablers or results. Consequently, the final proposed tool was composed of nine dimensions with 51 measures as performance enablers and three dimensions with 11 measures as performance results. Seven measures were added by the experts, who highlighted their increasing popularity in the UAE’s FM industry.Originality/valueThrough addressing the critical void in literature, this paper develops a specific PM tool aligning with the intricacy of the UAE’s FM industry, thus providing proactive contribution to the industry’s effective and sustainable growth.

The urgency of addressing climate change is increasingly evident through the rise in devastating natural disasters and significant shifts in global temperatures. With the urbanization of rural landscapes to accommodate population growth, the built environment has emerged as a major contributor to climate change, accounting for approximately 40% of natural resource consumption and carbon emissions. In pursuit of tackling climate challenges, countries have united under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to develop strategies for climate action and adaptation, through the Conference of the Parties (COP). The UAE has been an active member of the COP and has been at the forefront of implementing decarbonization strategies. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the decarbonization recommendations presented during COP26 and COP27, specifically focusing on the built environment sector. The primary objective is to highlight how recommendations were effectively incorporated into the UAE’s built environment sector, employing a case study approach further highlighting the specific implementation strategies adopted in the G+2 SEE Institute building while demonstrating how COP26, COP27, and the UAE’s National Climate Change Plan 2017–2050 recommendations were translated into practical measures. The study places particular emphasis on the areas of energy, water and waste management, investigating how these strategies were integrated to promote decarbonization efforts. By examining the G+2 SEE Institute building case, this research attempts to provide valuable insights on aligning built environment practices with climate change mitigation objectives. The planning of the building structure employed a systems thinking approach, while assessments were conducted to identify materials and designs that would enable the building to achieve net-zero status. Real-time data analysis was employed for comprehensive analysis. The findings of this study will contribute to the body of knowledge on sustainable construction practices and serve as a guide for stakeholders, including developers, policymakers, and practitioners, in adopting effective strategies in reducing carbon emissions and fostering environmental sustainability in line with the Paris Agreement.

Actualmente, las empresas se encuentran implicadas en ofertar artículos sostenibles los cuales manifiestan cualidades que los hacen diferentes de los productos tradicionales a través de empaques diferenciados en donde muestran certificación medio ambiental validando de esta manera su interés por el cuidado y bienestar al medio ambiente, como resultado de esto nace lo que se conoce como desarrollo sostenible termino basado en un concepto de desarrollo socio económico cuya finalidad es garantizar una vida de calidad y plenitud para todos. Muchas organizaciones se encuentran implicadas en ofertar productos sostenibles, en Ecuador lo hacen bajo los comisariatos o conocidos también como hipermercados, estos que pertenecen al sector minorista y atraen a las personas de distintas condiciones económicas. Dicho esto, el presente estudio tiene como objetivo principal; analizar la percepción y sensibilidad de los consumidores de los comisariatos en Ecuador frente a la aplicación de acciones sustentables que demuestren su interés por el bienestar del medio ambiente. Para llevarlo a cabo, se realizó bajo un enfoque cuantitativo, por medio de una investigación de tipo exploratoria y empírica, y para analizar los datos se utilizó el método PLS-SEM, donde se manifestó que las prácticas de sostenibilidad por parte de las empresas son efectivas para la creación de valor y lealtad a largo plazo en los consumidores.
