Assessment of the nutritional value of Capsosiphon fulvescens (Chlorophyta): developing a new species of marine macroalgae for cultivation in Korea

Abstract: The nutritive value of Capsosiphon fulvescens (C. Agardh) Setchell et Gardner, a new developing species for cultivation of marine macroalgae in Korea, was assessed by comparison with common edible green seaweed Ulva prolifera (Oeder) J. Agardh collected from Korea and Japan, based on analysis of its chemical composition. The contents of protein and of total, essential, and free amino acids of C. fulvescens were significantly higher than those of U. prolifera, whereas those of lipid, carbohydrate, and total die… Show more

“…In general, the crude protein content recorded for the studied red and brown seaweeds was similar to the one reported in other studies (e.g., Dawczynski et al 2007;Hwang et al 2007;Marsham et al 2007;Chakraborty and Santra 2008;Polat and Ozogul 2008). On the other hand, the crude protein content obtained for U. compressa (26.62%, Table 2) in the present study is higher than the one published for the genus by other authors (3-14%, see Dere et al 2003;McDermid and Stuercke 2003;Aguilera-Morales et al 2005;Renaud and Luong-Van 2006;Chakraborty and Santra 2008).…”

“…The lipid content did not significantly differ between Wando Values represent mean ± standard deviation (n03). Mean values in the same row followed by different letters differ significantly (p<0.05) 1 Ulva prolifera collected from Korea (Hwang et al 2008) (1.7±0.1%) and Gohung (1.6±0.1%) samples, at p<0.05, while the lipid content of Janghung samples (Janghung-Dec, Janghung-Jan, and Janghung-Feb) ranged from 1.2±0.1% to 1.8±0.1%. There was a high variation in ash content with harvest region, ranging from 9.6 ± 0.5% to 12.9 ± 0.5% (Table 1).…”

“…Recently, considerable attention has been given to Capsosiphon fulvescens as an alternative resource to create new economic opportunities in Korea and its market has continued to increase with increasing consumer preference for healthy foods. The green alga C. fulvescens (C. Agardh) Setchell and Gardner is a filamentous chlorophycean seaweed cultivated in the intertidal zone with about 5-6 h exposure time per one tidal cycle (Hwang et al 2008;Sun et al 2011). About 650,000 t (wet weight) were cultivated in 1997 (Informatization Officer 1998) along the southern cultivation coast of Korea in a short period between December and the following February (Hwang et al 2008;Sun et al 2011).…”
