Objectives: Even though research is the cornerstone of advancement in medicine, training in research during the undergraduate (UG) years is ignored in the current scenario of medical education. Hence, it is imperative to motivate UG medical students to take up research to train themselves and equally important is to create awareness of available platforms for UG research. The present study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of orientation program designed to sensitize and motivate the medical students toward participation in Indian Council of Medical Research -Short-Term Studentship (ICMR -STS) program and to compare the awareness of medical students toward online registration and application process for ICMR -STS fellowship participation before and after this program. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based, and interventional study was conducted among the participants of an orientation program to sensitize the UGs regarding ICMR -STS program. The questionnaire was administered to the willing participants to collect information regarding the effectiveness of the program in motivating the students toward enrollment in ICMR-STS program and creating awareness of the timeline of registration and application process of this program. The data were entered in excel sheet and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Two hundred and fifty-two students participated in the study with the majority of the students perceiving research in medical field is important (98.75%) and UG students should be involved in research (91.25%). Even before the orientation program, 85% of the students were aware of ICMR-STS program with teachers (68.33%) being the major source of information. The awareness of online registration and application process for ICMR-STS fellowship improved significantly after the orientation program for all the timelines (P < 0.00001) except the timeline to submit the completed ICMR-STS report (P > 0.0.05). The willingness to enroll into ICMR-STS program improved significantly (P = 0.02) following the program. Conclusion:The study demonstrated the positive attitude of students toward research and improvement in awareness of the online registration and application process toward ICMR-STS program. The orientation program was also responsible in motivating students to take up research under this program.

Medical education is a systematic process wherein interested and eligible individuals are trained to become physicians/surgeons. It is assumed that a person who completes the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) degree will be competent enough to perform the duties of a physician of first contact. However, it is not the case with graduates from India. Most MBBS graduates prefer to pursue a postgraduate degree and become unavailable to people or governments. The doctor-to-patient ratio in India (1:1,655) does not currently satisfy the World Health Organization's prescribed ratio (1:1,000). The Government of India, therefore, has been taking initiatives to increase the number of MBBS graduates. Moreover, there are several doubts over the quality of medical education and the competency of medical students. In addition, the National Medical Commission, the epic body that regulates the medical education and practice in India, has recently been conducting medical education technology workshops to improve teachers and has devised a new curriculum to elevate the standards of medical education in India. This editorial attempts to provide readers with the current status of medical education and research in India.

Linking teaching with research in any stream is the need of the hour. Homoeopathy, being an integral part of health care delivery system in India and many other countries, goes no exception to it. Both teaching and research are inter-related, dependent and complementary to each other. Without quality teaching, research is like learning without curiosity, or like cataract surgery without restoring visual equity, or like studying Materia Medica without knowledge in Organon of Medicine. Similarly, sans high standard research, teaching in any medical discipline is like searching without direction, or like operating upon a human subject without knowing anatomy. In spite of the fact that some of the teaching institutions have taken up research projects and the outcomes of such research studies have been published in reputed medical journals, yet the quality of such articles needs further improvement. Many homoeopathy research organisations as well as the researchers, on certain aspects, have failed to update with the recent advancements in the field of education. Absence of mandatory provision for conducting research in teaching curriculum at undergraduate (UG) level and lack of proper training on research methodology and biostatistics at postgraduate (PG) level have led to the non-involvement of academicians and students in research studies. As a result, a void has been created in scientific publications by the faculty and students of homoeopathic colleges. The latest progresses in the field of research are useful for teaching of the individual subjects of UG and PG courses. The academicians as well as the researchers have to sit and discuss across the table the modalities of meaningful integration of teaching and research for mutual benefit. Hence, different facets of connecting teaching and research need to be deliberated upon to find out mutually acceptable solutions.
