Assessment of the effect of condensed (acacia and quebracho) and hydrolysable (chestnut and valonea) tannins on rumen fermentation and methane production in vitro

Abstract: Supplying acacia, chestnut or valonea tannins at 50 g kg⁻¹ has the potential to reduce CH₄ production and ruminal protein degradation with minimum detrimental effects on efficiency of ruminal fermentation.

“…Lower VFA concentration also suggested that microbial fermentation of protein and starch was reduced due to SHE supplementation. In agreement, Hassanat and Benchaar (2013) reported a decrease in total VFA concentration and an increase in acetate molar proportion with the inclusion of tannins in an in vitro study. Reduction in total VFA concentration could be related to the formation of tanninÁcarbohydrate complexes that are less degradable (Martinez et al 2006).…”

“…However, reductions in concentrations of NH 3 and BCVFA with PPE supplementation suggest that the bioactive compounds in PPE were more effective than those in SHE at inhibiting the deamination process (Hassanat and Benchaar 2013).…”

“…However, another study by Hassanat & Benchaar (2013), using various sources and concentrations of tannins on rumen microbial fermentation in vitro, showed that gas and total VFA production decreased as tannin concentration increased. This discrepancy could be owing to the usage of various types of tannins, because in the results obtained by Hassanat and Benchaar (2013), tannins from Valonea were the only tannin source that reduced methane production without affecting VFA concentration.…”

“…Sin embargo, Tan et al (26) encontraron una reducción de la concentración de ácido propiónico con la inclusión de TC de L. leucocephala, mientras que otros estudios in vitro demuestran la capacidad de los TC de aumentar la concentración de ácido propiónico (28) . Es posible que la dosis de inclusión de los TC usando como fuente las arbóreas tropicales no sean suficientes para cambiar el patrón de fermentación y la población bacteriana ruminal (9,15,25) .…”
