“…The pH of the soil and the electrical conductivity (EC) method were used to evaluate soil salinity ( Bañón et al, 2021 ), The percentage of weight loss of organic matter on ignition (W SOI %) method was used to determine the soil organic matter (OM) content ( Nakhli et al, 2019 ). The obtained samples were air-dried in the shade and passed through a 60-mesh standard sieve before analysis.…”

“…The manufacturer suggests the application of the Hilorst model [19] as a feasible approach to convert bulk EC directly measured by the sensor into ECp, the latter representing a salinity index closer to the salinity felt by plants. Bañón et al [43] observed that ECp obtained by Hilorst model [19] could be considered a reliable salinity index when substrate moisture is maintained constant, especially at high values. In this perspective, the findings of our study, where sensor-based irrigation strategy consisted in maintaining constant substrate VWC levels, confirm that ECp trends monitoring is suitable to be used as a tool to control fertilization status during growing cycles of plants in soilless growing media conditions.…”

“…Plug sensors methods are not preferred here since they are highly compatible with homogenous solutions (dos Santos Sousa et al, 2021 ; Visconti & de Paz, 2016 ). Therefore, a laboratory-oriented method was proposed in basis of pour-through technique (Altland, 2021 ; Bañón et al, 2021 ; Palimąka, Pietrzyk, & Sak, 2016 ) to find the simultaneous EC magnitudes of test specimens.…”
