Assessment of soil quality for guided fertilization in 7 barley agro-ecological areas of China

Abstract: Soil quality is the basis for the development of sustainable agriculture and may be used for evaluating the sustainability of soil management practices. Soil quality status and integrated soil quality index (SQI) in sampled 97 farmlands distributed in 7 barley agro-ecological areas of China were analyzed by using 13 soil chemical parameters. The results showed six principal components totally explained 72% variability for the 13 parameters and identified 9 parameters (includes pH, NH4+-N, NO3--N, available P, … Show more

“…Environmental pH perturbation is a significant factor affecting both plants and their associated microbiota, as it can disrupt cellular homeostasis and physiology ( Zhou et al., 2022 ). The southwestern regions of China have experienced high levels of acid rain, which may have had an impact on foliar ecology ( Zhang et al., 2021 ).…”

“…Environmental pH is considered as an important factor for plants since it influences soil physical, chemical properties and nutrient availability and thereby affects plant inner homeostasis and growth ( Zhou et al., 2022 ). Interestingly, we have excavated seven microbe-derived gene entries linking with pH homeostasis maintenance and acid stress resistance in five tested plant genomes ( Table 2 ): two basic amino acid/spermidine/putrescine transporter and a proton extrusion protein (PcxA) encoding genes acquired from Bacteria, and genes within the arginine deiminase pathway (argininosuccinate synthase, argininosuccinate lyase, carbamate kinase and arginine deiminase) derived from Bacteria and Amoeba, which might conduct pH regulation by neutralization of proton with base substrates like ammonia, arginine and polyamine.…”

“…Barley has more than 5000 years of cultivation history in China [7]. It is mainly used as feed and beer industrial raw materials, and it is also the most important rotation crop and functional health food for Tibetan compatriots [8]. In recent years, with the improvement of people's living standards and the rapid development of the processing industry, the beer and feeding value of barley has been further improved [9].…”

“…Meanwhile, barley has the characteristics of wide adaptability, strong resistance to stress, and short growth period [10]. It is widely cultivated in northeast China, northwest China, south China, Huanghuai, Yunnan-Guizhou, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau [8]. Therefore, whether barley has a wide range of adaptability, salt and alkali resistance, barren resistance, and other stress resistance is related to its rhizosphere microecological environment, and determining the characteristics of the composition of these microbial communities is an urgent matter in terms of barley's wide adaptability and stress resistance [11,12].…”
