Goats (Capra hircus) are an important farm animal species. Copy number variation (CNV) represents a major source of genomic structural variation. We investigated the diversity of CNV distribution in goats using CaprineSNP50 genotyping data generated by the ADAPTmap Project. We identified 6286 putative CNVs in 1023 samples from 50 goat breeds using PennCNV. These CNVs were merged into 978 CNV regions, spanning ~262 Mb of total length and corresponding to ~8.96% of the goat genome. We then divided the samples into six subgroups per geographic distribution and constructed a comparative CNV map. Our results revealed a population differentiation in CNV across different geographical areas, including Western Asia, Eastern Mediterranean, Alpine & Northern Europe, Madagascar, Northwestern Africa, and Southeastern Africa groups. The results of a cluster heatmap analysis based on the CNV count per individual across different groups was generally consistent with the one generated from the SNP data, likely reflecting the population history of different goat breeds. We sought to determine the gene content of these CNV events and found several important CNVoverlapping genes (e.g. EDNRA, ADAMTS20, ASIP, KDM5B, ADAM8, DGAT1, CHRNB1, CLCN7, and EXOSC4), which are involved in local adaptations such as coat color, muscle development, metabolic processes, osteopetrosis, and embryonic development. Therefore, this research generated an extensive CNV map in the worldwide population of goat, which offers novel insight into the goat genome and its functional annotation.
Domesticated buffaloes have been integral to rice-paddy agro-ecosystems for millennia, yet relatively little is known about the buffalo genomics. Here, we sequenced and assembled reference genomes for both swamp and river buffaloes and we re-sequenced 230 individuals (132 swamp buffaloes and 98 river buffaloes) sampled from across Asia and Europe. Beyond the many actionable insights that our study revealed about the domestication, basic physiology and breeding of buffalo, we made the striking discovery that the divergent domestication traits between swamp and river buffaloes can be explained with recent selections of genes on social behavior, digestion metabolism, strengths and milk production.
The purpose of extension is to disseminate advice to farmers. Knowledge gaps contribute to yield gaps. Services and quality inputs are essential productivity-enhancing tools. However, their optimum use requires knowledge. Farmers also need information on prices and markets, post-harvest management, produce quality determinants, and safety standards. Some farmers marshal knowledge themselves. The “resource-poor” majority, growers of much of India’s food, need external, science-based, extension to complement local knowledge. Much debate focuses on how best to achieve the desired outcomes that extension can convey. Many countries have neglected extension and indeed agriculture as a whole. But interest appears to be returning globally, and India is no exception. In 2009, a National Seminar on Agriculture Extension discussed knowledge management, convergence of extension systems, the role of information and communication technology and mass media, private sector initiatives including public–private partnerships, and farmer- and market-led extension systems. This article builds on that discussion. It looks at extension in relation to both primary production and market links, and acknowledges the contributions of all providers of extension, public and private.
Background: Potato is a major food crop in the tropical regions of Africa. However, potato yields continue to remain very low in these regions mainly due to use of poor quality seed. The recent development of rapid seed multiplication technique has helped to shorten the duration of certified seed potato (CSP) production and increase the supply of seed. This study assessed the effect of using CSP on yield, input use, and food security among smallholder farmers. It focused on potato growers in central highlands of Kenya, who were in close proximity to a private seed multiplier that uses these new techniques. The study used the propensity score matching technique and data collected from 408 smallholder farmers through personal interviews. The farmers were stratified by use of CSP. Results: The study found positive effect of using certified seed on both yield and food security. There was also a slight increase in input usage, apparently due to pursuit by farmers to optimize the gains from CSP. Conclusion: The study concludes that using CSP has positive effect on smallholder farm households.
Potato is a major food staple that makes a significant contribution to food security, having potential to smooth the volatility in food prices resulting from recent episodes of global food price increases. Despite its importance, most potato growers continue to use poor-quality seed, normally obtained from local/community sources. This study uses means-end chain theory to examine the drivers of use of quality seed potato, and the mental models associated with quality seed potato use. It finds that the decision to purchase and use quality seed is driven by deep-seated life goals that farmers pursue, and that profit-making is merely a means to these end/ life goals. It further finds that the structure of mental models differs by the gender of the adopter and between adopters and nonadopters. The study concludes that the structure and content of farmers' mental models differ by farmer type. The implications of the study findings for policy are discussed.
