Objective: To investigate the relationship between physical activity level and sexual function in middle-aged women. Methods: A cross-sectional study with a sample of 370 middle-aged women (40-65 years old), treated at public health care facilities in a Brazilian city. A questionnaire was used containing enquiries on sociodemographic, clinical and behavioral characteristics: the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), short form, and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Results:The average age of the women studied was 49.8 years (± 8.1), 67% of whom exhibited sexual dysfunction (FSFI ≤ 26.55). Sedentary women had a higher prevalence (78.9%) of sexual dysfunction when compared to active (57.6%) and moderately active (66.7%) females (p = 0.002). Physically active women obtained higher score in all FSFI domains (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain) and total FSFI score (20.9), indicating better sexual function than their moderately active (18.8) and sedentary (15.6) counterparts (p <0.05). Conclusion: Physical activity appears to influence sexual function positively in middle-aged women.

Resultados: se revisaron 108 artículos y se seleccionaron 72, los cuales estaban relacionados de forma directa con el tema de investigación. A continuación, se describe la fisiopatología del trastorno del deseo sexual en la mujer en climaterio, mostrando la respectiva evidencia bibliográfica.Conclusiones: el bajo deseo sexual en la mujer en climaterio, está asociado a la disminución de las hormonas sexuales, tanto de los andrógenos suprarrenales como ováricos y al cese de la producción de estrógenos ováricos; sin embargo, la respuesta sexual es multifactorial y multidimensional, por lo tanto, depende de aspectos biológicos, psicológicos y sociales, más que de la carga hormonal circulante. Results: we reviewed 108 articles and selected 72, which were directly related to the research topic. Next, we describe the pathophysiology of sexual desire disorder in women in climacteric, showing the respective bibliographic evidence.Conclusions: low sexual desire in women in climacteric is associated with a decrease in the sexual hormones of both adrenal and ovarian androgens and the cessation of production of ovarian estrogens; However, the sexual response is multifactorial and multidimensional, therefore, it depends on biological, psychological and social aspects, rather than on the circulating hormonal load.Keywords: climacteric; Sexual dysfunction; Feminine; Physiopathology; Menopause; Women; Sexuality. IntroducciónEl climaterio es el periodo previo, concomitante y posterior a la menopausia, en el que se establecen cambios biológicos (debido a la disminución de la fertilidad), clínicos (resultantes de los cambios en el ciclo menstrual) y endocrinos (hipoestrogenismo por la disminución de la actividad ovárica) en la mujer; se caracteriza por la transición de la vida reproductiva a la no reproductiva [1,2]. Pregnancy and delivery are one of the most significant periods of women's life that causes hormonal and bodily alterations which could have major effects on sexual function and sexual quality of life. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of mode of delivery on postpartum sexual function and sexual quality of life in primiparous women. A comparative descriptive design was used. The study was conducted at the family planning outpatient clinic of Benha teaching hospital. A purposive sample of 277 primiparous women were divided in two groups vaginal delivery (n= 140) and cesarean section (n=137). Three tools were used for data collection; 1) Structured interviewing questionnaire to collect data about the women' demographic characteristics, gynecologic and sexual history. 2) Female sexual function index was used to evaluate sexual function of the studied women. 3) Sexual quality of life-female questionnaire. The study results showed that 65% of vaginal delivery group and 57.7% of cesarean section group had poor sexual function level, 76.4% of vaginal delivery group and 75.9% of cesarean section group had average level of sexual quality of life after delivery, which revealed no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05) between the two groups as regard to postpartum sexual function and sexual quality of life. Moreover, there was a positive highly statistically significant correlation (P < 0.01) between the women' sexual function scores and their sexual quality of life scores. The study concluded that there were no statistically significant differences between vaginal delivery and cesarean section groups as regard to postpartum sexual function and sexual quality of life. The study recommended that nurses should provide sexual education for women during postpartum period to enhance sexual functioning and sexual quality of life.
