Disturbances are processes inherently variable in time and space. This variability comprises a key determinant of ecosystem responses to disturbance. Temporal patterns can, however, vary significantly both among and within individual disturbance events. While recent research has demonstrated an importance of the former, studies on the effects of variability within perturbations have consistently confounded temporal variability with other disturbance attributes (e.g. overall intensity or duration). We established a field experiment to test explicitly the hypothesis that the temporal pattern within perturbations can drive ecosystem responses independently of other disturbance traits. We examined the effects of two disturbance regimes comprising sediment pulses of contrasting temporal pattern (constant and temporally variable intensities) on the benthic invertebrate assemblage of a headwater stream. The overall intensity, duration, timing and frequency of the perturbations were, however, identical. Invertebrates drifting during the temporally variable pulses were more abundant and differed in taxonomic and trophic structure than those exposed to constant perturbations. Moreover, whereas temporal patterns of disturbance events had no immediate effect on benthic invertebrate assemblages in situ, assemblages exposed to the constant perturbations took longer to recover from sediment disturbances than those exposed to temporally variable perturbations. Our results demonstrate that variability in the temporal pattern of intensity within individual perturbations can regulate, independently of other disturbance attributes, the extent and type of ecosystem responses to, and recovery from, disturbances. Effective environmental management and policy therefore necessitate the explicit quantification of temporal patterns of intensity both within and among perturbations.

Résumé Afin d'évaluer l'impact potentiel de la vidange, les flux de nutriments et de matières sont quantifiés lors du remplissage et de la vidange d'un étang construit en dérivation, à l'aval d'une chaîne d'étangs. La cinétique de vidange a été établie à l'aide d'un modèle numérique de terrain restituant la surface topographique de l'étang. Les matières en suspension et les principaux nutriments ont été régulièrement quantifiés. La qualité hydrobiologique du cours d'eau récepteur a été contrôlée pendant et après la vidange. L'étang a exporté 8.5 tonnes de matières en suspension et des quantités de nutriments relativement élevées. Nos résultats confirment l'existence de deux phases critiques, ne concernant cependant qu'un très faible volume d'effluent. Compte tenu des capacités élevées de sédimentation des matières en suspension, la courte durée d'exposition associée à un linéaire de fossés suffisant pourrait limiter l'impact de ces matières rejetées.Mots clefs bassin versant; volume vidangé; matières en suspension; nutriments; pisciculture; bonnes pratiques; France Water quality characteristics for draining an extensive fish farming pond Abstract This study reports the monitoring of the water quality during filling and draining periods of a 24 ha pond built with a bypass ditch, and managed extensively for carp production. The total volume of water was determined by using a digital elevation model based on topographic data. Total suspended solids and main nutrients have been measured. An adapted hydrobiological score was calculated in the downstream. The results show that outlet opening and fish harvesting are critical steps for the export but concern only 5% of the total effluent volume. The effluent exported 8.5 t of total suspended solids and was rich in P and organic matter. The sedimentation in the ditch could explain that the receiving stream was not so affected by this organic discharge. Better practices of managing and harvesting could improve the quality of the effluent and limit its potential impact.

Evaluation of economic viability and sensitivity analysis of Indian major carp culture

Indian major carps viz., catla Catla catla (Hamilton); rohu Labeo rohita (Hamilton) and mrigal Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton) were cultured with a stocking density of 50000 fingerlings ha -1 for a period of 300 days with all possible best management practices. Sensitivity of different fixed and operating cost variables, production and sale price involved in the experiment were analysed. All the above costs varied by ±10%, ±20% and ±30% respectively and the net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR) were determined. Among all the inputs, feed cost was found to be the most sensitive. NPV and IRR values ranged from 7 to 20% and 5 to 15% respectively with varied feed cost ranging from 10 to 30%. Increases either in the production or in the sale price by 10, 20 and 30%, led to increase in the NPV by around 22, 43 and 65% and IRR by around 17, 33 and 49% respectively from their original values. Present study suggests that proper feeding and marketing strategy should be emphasised to get maximum economic benefit from Indian major carp culture.
