Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were measured in dorsal muscle and eggs of coho salmon, lake trout, and chinook salmon collected from Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron (Michigan waters). Absolute and relative concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs varied among sampling locations (inter- and intralake) and fish species. Fish collected from Bay City (Saginaw Bay) contained the greatest concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs both in muscle and eggs. Among the three fish species, chinook salmon accumulated greater concentrations than did coho salmon or lake trout. Concentrations of PCDFs were greater than those of PCDDs in all fishes. OCDF and TCDF were the predominant congeners of PCDF, whereas OCDD and TCDD concentrations predominated in PCDDs. Homolog compositions of PCDDs and PCDFs suggested the existence of multiple local sources in various locations. Concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs in eggs of fishes were significantly correlated with those in muscle.

A single i.p. injection of 5 pg 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCBP)/g body mass in adult brook trout (IFkB&ve&inus fontinadis) resulted in decreased (p < 0.0001) growth rate despite pair feeding. Plasma retinol decreased (p < 0.0037). Intestinal retinyl palmitate (RP) and 3,4-dehydroretinyl palmitate (DRP) concentrations decreased in TCBP-injected males (RP, p < 0.0143; DWP, p < 0.0009), whereas retinoid levels did mot decrease significantly in TCBP-injected females. The RP:DRP ratio in trout liver increased (p < O.OOOl)B These results suggested that DRB is more sensitive than RP to the effects of K B P . No significant differences in ovarian retinoids occurred in post-spawning trout. Field validation of the effects on intestinal retinoids was conducted with lake sturgeon (Aeipenserfudveseens) caught at a contaminated site on the Des Prairies River wear MontrCal (Strn Lawrence River population) and reference sturgeon taken from a site near the origin of the Ottawa River in Laverendrye Park. Aquatische Sedimente sind finale Senken für unbeabsichtigt formierte PCDD/F. Ungeklärt sind die Bildungsbedingungen für die PCDD in 8120 Jahre alten Sedimenten der Harima‐Nada‐Bucht in Japan und in 350 bis 400 Jahre alten Sedimenten der Ostsee. Sie eignen sich unter Berücksichtigung von Transformationsprozessen als Quellenindikatoren. In ihnen sind PCDD/F 30 km vom Emittenten nachgewiesen worden, im Benthos in bis zu 50 km Distanz, ein beachtliches Bioakkumulationspotential indizierend. Neben fehlenden Kontaminationsdaten sind die sedimentinternen Verteilungs‐ und Diageneseprozesse, die Prozesse an der Sediment/Wasser‐Grenzfläche, die aeroben und anaeroben Degradationsreaktionen und die Bioverfügbarkeit aus Sedimenten zu analysieren. Die Quellen und die Transport‐ und Transformationspfade sind weitergehend zu erforschen. Eine Kontaminationsbewertung hinsichtlich der PCDD/F inklusive Analoga in Sedimenten und aquatischen Ökosystemen ist zu erarbeiten.
