This study presents the non‐isothermal behavior of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) biodegradable films with 1–5 wt% of cellulose nanoparticles (CNs) manufactured by solution casting using N,N‐dimethylformide and chloroform as the solvents. X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with field emission gun were performed for CNs in order to determine its morphology and crystalline properties. The effect of non‐isothermal crystallization of PHBV and its nanocomposites was studied using differential scanning calorimetry technique. The incorporation of CNs increases the crystallization rate with up to 3 wt%. Structural parameters were studied using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The free volume does not change upon CNs addition in spite of form less perfect crystals and increase the lamellar thickness. POLYM. COMPOS., 40:3156–3165, 2019. © 2018 Society of Plastics Engineers

In this work, nanobiocomposites of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) reinforced with cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were produced by electrospinning and solution casting process. CNFs were obtained by sulfuric acid hydrolysis from Imperata brasiliensis fibers. Nanocomposites loaded with 1 (wt. %) of CNFs were prepared using a mixture of solvents chloroform (CHCl 3 ): N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), in the ratio of 78:22 with 30 h of solubilization. Films by solution casting were obtained in a petri dish, at 50 °C for 1 hour, using drying casting temperature of 153 °C. Mats by electrospinning were obtained with a needle 20x10, drum collector rotation 27 rpm, and working distance of 10 cm. Films and mats were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). It was possible to conclude that for nanobiocomposites obtained by solution casting, the addition of CNFs did not affect the transparency of the films, but provided a significant increase in the crystallization rate as observed by DSC analysis, while for electrospinning nanobiocomposites a considerable improvement in process increasing electrospinning time and quality of the mats manufactured, were observed.

Bioresorbable antibacterial PCL‐PLA‐nHA composite membranes for oral and maxillofacial defects

Degradable implant membranes designed to separate hard and soft tissues and to trigger the growth of underlying bone and with antimicrobial properties are needed for the management of bone defects, ridge augmentation and to facilitate dental implants. In this study, the composite scaffolds of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(caprolactone) (PCL) blended with nano hydroxyapatite and cefixime‐β cyclodextrin (Cfx‐βCD) inclusion complexes were synthesized by electrospinning. The prepared electrospun fibrous membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Membranes were microporous with random fibers in the range of 0.2–0.37 µm. The data from FTIR spectral analysis helped to characterize the presence of PCL, PLA, Cfx, and βCD in the electrospun membranes. In addition, the mechanical properties (i.e., elastic modulus and tensile strength) of the scaffolds were investigated. The mechanical strength and suture retention ability of the membranes was comparable to that of skin grafts. Drug release assays confirmed the slow release of Cfx from the membranes in the presence of βCD and antimicrobial studies showed that the membranes possessed antibacterial properties. The interaction of cells with membranes was evaluated by culturing them with the mouse pre‐osteoblast cell line MC3T3 and assessment of bone formation was done using Alizarin Red Assay. Culturing MC3T3 cells on the scaffolds showed that cells attached and entered the membranes and increased in number over time. In summary, these membranes are flexible, strong, bactericidal and osteogenic, which are the ideal implant properties for dental and maxillofacial surgery. POLYM.
