Purpose: Road transport aspects are becoming increasingly important due to their high impact on economic, environmental and social sustainability. Considering the triple bottom line approach, best practices play a fundamental role within organisations. The purpose of this paper is to analyse several sustainable initiatives in road transport adopted by companies.Design/methodology/approach: The findings were developed and evaluated based on empirical data captured through a survey of 98 professionals involved in logistics and transport activities. Additionally, key literature on transport initiatives was reviewed to supplement the framework for the implementation of best practices in road transport.Findings: The exploratory study shows the importance of each best practice and determines the level of implementation of each initiative, comparing the results among different dealers (retailers, wholesalers, carriers and manufacturers), type of transport fleet and companies’ revenues.Research limitations/implications: The sample of 98 companies was based on simple search filters and the group is not wholly representative of all sectors. Respondents were mainly managers from Spain involved in logistics and transport activities. Surveyed companies included manufacturing, retailers, wholesalers and third-party logistics providers.Practical implications: The most common best practices in road transport are identified, including initiatives related to: efficiency, reusability, safety, optimization, emissions, waste and recycling. Initiatives that influence road transport are ranked by their degree of implementation in the companies analysed. Social implications: Implementation of some of these best practices may help lessen negative impacts of road transport on society and the environment.Originality/value: The study results indicate which practices are most frequently used and their level of implementation depending on companies’ roles in the supply chain, revenues and types of transport fleet. By implementing the proposed best practices, companies will adopt sustainable behaviors to improve their transport performance.

Summary This paper presents an efficient framework for power loss reduction (PLR) in distribution networks. The aim of the suggested PLR model is to maximize the benefit earned for every dollar annually paid for the PLR purposes. As a main contribution compared with other works in the area of PLR, the budget constraint is incorporated with the presented model. Furthermore, in this paper, 4 potential alternatives implemented for PLR including distributed generation installation, network reconfiguration, distribution feeders' reinforcement, and installation of capacitor banks are simultaneously employed and subsequently, the optimum portion of each, based on the considered budget limitation, is determined. To solve the formulated PLR model, the integer‐based particle swarm optimization algorithm is utilized. The suggested PLR model together with integer‐based particle swarm optimization has been implemented in MATLAB programming environment structurally integrated with DIgSILENT software. Additionally, simulations are carried out on 2 distribution systems encompassing the IEEE 33‐bus and a 94‐bus real‐world distribution system. The obtained results for both of distribution systems demonstrate that the variation in limitation of budget can change the portion of each of 4 loss reduction alternatives and also the benefit received versus each dollar of annual expenditure. Furthermore, it is comprehended that the more than enough growth in investment cost can potentially decrease the benefit earned versus each dollar of annual cost paid for the PLR implementation.

Розглянуто проблему обґрунтування розвитку складних розподiльних систем електропостачання як iєрархiя завдань, на першому етапi якої є розв'язання завдання вибору рацiональної конфiгурацiї системи електропостачання. Розроблено математичну модель рiшення задачi оптимального розмiщення декiлькох джерел живлення i закрiплення за ними споживачiв в системi електропостачання з використанням алгоритмiв генетичного програмування. Запропонованi методи дозволяють отримати побудову оптимальної траси лiнiї електропередачi, що зв'язує споживача з джерелом живлення, з урахуванням обмежень на мiсцевостi. Розроблено модифiкацiю простого генетичного алгоритму, на основi якої реалiзовано iнформацiйну систему. Дана система вирiшує питання комбiнаторної оптимiзацiї у вiдношеннi вибору оптимальної локацiї розмiщення джерел живлення у розподiленiй електричнiй мережi. Проведена оцiнка часу розрахунку в залежностi вiд параметрiв задачi. Показано, що для задач малої i середньої розмiрностi розроблений алгоритм забезпечує мiнiмальний час рахунку. Результати рiшення задачi для конкретного прикладу демонструють перевагу генетичного пiдходу над методом повного перебору.
