Assessment of Microhardness of Enamel Carious Like Lesions After Treatment with Nova Min, Bio Min and Remin Pro Containing Toothpastes: An in Vitro Study

Tobacco use has a major public health concern that results in significant morbidity and mortality. Tobacco use has an injurious effect on oral health such as oral cancer and potentially malignant disorders like , oral fibrosis. Tobacco use has been found to have a strong, chronic and dose dependent effect on periodontal tissues due to poor oral hygiene caused by increased deposit of debris and calculus among tobacco users. This study aimed to find the association between oral hygiene status and tobacco dependence. A retrospective study was conducted using the case records of patients in University hospital. Data on tobacco dependence and oral hygiene status from 150 patient records were collected and for association. Descriptive statistics and chi-square association was done. The mean age of patients in the records was 35 ± 12.44 years and males (14%) had severe tobacco dependence. The mean Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHIS) score was found to be 2.03 ± 1.009 which is interpreted as fair. There was no statistically significant association between oral hygiene status and tobacco dependence (p= 0.157). Tobacco dependence has no role in the oral hygiene status of an individual.

To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of biomedical waste management among undergraduate dental students of a private teaching hospital in Chennai. Biomedical wastes are all wastes that are being generated during diagnosis, treatment or immunisation of human beings in the testing of biologicals and it's contaminated with human fluids. The waste generated by the healthcare workers during the treatment of patients is the most dangerous of all wastes and has a higher potential for infection and injury. This was an online questionnaire-based study, conducted on an online survey platform in April. The questionnaire was circulated among the Undergraduate dental students (third and fourth years and interns) of Saveetha dental college and hospitals, Chennai. The responses were collected and tabulated using the excel sheet and were exported to the SPSS software by IBM for statistical analysis. Among the interns, 85% had good knowledge and practice of biomedical waste management. 85% had a positive attitude towards the management of BMW. Amongst the final years, 80% had good knowledge, only 65% had a positive attitude and only 18% of the final years practice good BMW management. In the third year, 50% had good knowledge, 58% had a positive attitude and 58% had a good practice of biomedical waste management. The interns had good knowledge, a more positive attitude and good practice of biomedical waste management compared to the third and final years.

Association between Gender and Prevalence of Pit and Fissure Caries among Patients Visiting Private Dental College - A Retrospective study

Oral health contributes to personal well being and overall quality of life of an individual. Adequate knowledge regarding oral health is mandatory as it is directly related to general health, so the Aim of our study was to determine the association between Gender and Prevalence of Pit and Fissure caries among the patients visiting Private Dental College. A retrospective study was conducted among the patients visiting private dental colleges using their case records in the electronic information management system. The subjects were selected randomly from the digital data entry and the data required was collected. The records were collected from the month of June 2019 to March 2020, with a total of 24,525 case sheets were retrieved. Age of the patients was categorized into 18 to 25 years, 26 to 35 years and 36 to 45 years. Case sheets which recorded Class 1 occlusal pit and fissure caries and gender of the patients were used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics, chi-square statistical tests were conducted using the SPSS software version 23.0. In our sample, 60.4% of males had 7-12 occlusal pit and fissure caries, and 58.3% had 4-6 Occlusal Pit and Fissure caries followed by 58.4% had 0-3 occlusal pit and Fissure caries. Comparatively the females had a lesser number of occlusal Pit and Fissure caries, and there was no statistically significant association between gender and occlusal pit and fissure caries (P<0.05) in our study. In conclusion, the prevalence of occlusal Pit and Fissure caries was higher among males compared to females with the highest distribution in the age group of 18 to 25 years.
