Assessment of Microbial Quality of Chlorinated Drinking Tap Water and Susceptibility of Gram Negative Bacterial Isolates Towards Chlorine

Abstract: Sixty (56.1%) water samples crossed the permissible limit of WHO guideline value in heterotrophic plate count and total coliform count each. Ten different genera of gram negative bacteria were recovered in which E. coli was predominant followed by Citrobacter spp., Shigella spp., Enterobacter spp., Providencia spp., Klebsiella spp., Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas spp., Proteus spp. and Edwardsiella spp. Higher the temperature of water sample, higher the bacterial growth was obtained (p= 0.002), and similarly hig… Show more

“…Moreover, Escherichia with 9%, 38%, 6% and 19% was observed in nished water (LF) and three reservoirs (LR1, LR2 and LR3) respectively. In agreement with this study, several opportunistic pathogenic genera were identi ed from chlorinated drinking tap water with Escherichia as predominant genera [61]. Legionella with 3% relative abundance was found in source water (LS), and very small percentage from nished water (LF), few of the reservoir (LR5), tap (LT2) and storage tanker (LS3).…”

“…According Bishankha et al (2013) bacteria developed chlorine resistance owing to structural modifications on the cell surface that can lead to increased microbial adhesion to surfaces or suspended particulate matter. Under these circumstances, the resistance of total coliforms to disinfectants may cause them inefficient regarding water quality assessments in schools.…”

“…These were within the South African Water Quality guideline standards of 5.0 to 9.0 [45] for domestic use. Temperature is a key determinant of growth and survival of microbes in water and it plays an important role in their survival [46,47]. Microbial growth increases with temperature, and this might increase the problems related to taste, odour, and colour of water [48,49].…”
