Assessment of Isokinetic Muscle Strength in Women Who Are Obese

Abstract: Study design:Cross-sectional study of isokinetic trunk and knee muscle strength in women who are obese. Objective: To provide reference values, to identify variables that affect peripheral muscle strength, and to provide recommendations for isokinetic testing of trunk and knee muscles in women who are obese and morbidly obese. Background: The assessment of peripheral muscle strength is useful for the quantification of possible loss of strength, for exercise prescription, and for the evaluation of the effect of… Show more

“…Therefore, a gravity correction was performed using 63% of body weight to calculate the Gravity Effect Torque (GET). 2,27 The isokinetic dynamometer Cybex TORSO unit was used to measure trunk left ± right rotation strength of the oblique abdominal muscles. In this test, there is no contribution of gravity.…”

“…However, methodological problems to accurately measure these muscle performances exist. 2 First, correction for the effect of gravity is dif®cult to perform, as a protocol to accurately weigh the trunk has not been described in the literature yet. Moreover, inertia to overcome the weight of the trunk when accelerating is larger in obese subjects.…”

“…As a consequence, back pain may become more severe, which, in turn, may lead to further changes -abandoning the exercise programme and even greater progression of unfavourable changes within the spine as a result of restricted movements [10][11][12]. Physiotherapy aims to stop this vicious circle.…”
