49Background: Although cognition has been studied extensively among patients with schizophrenia, social cognition has only recently emerged as an area of interest. The objective of the current study was to use structural equation modelling to test the hypothesis that the relation between cognitive performance and social function is mediated by patients' social cognitive abilities. Methods: We assessed participants who met criteria for a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder, with equal distribution among first-and multi-episode participants, and nonpsychiatric controls on a range of measures within each of the domains of cognition, social cognition and social function. Results: Using structural equation modelling, we derived a model that explained 79.7% of the variance in social function and demonstrated that the link between cognition and social function was fully mediated by social cognition. Limitations: A limitation of this study is that the measures contributing to the structural equation modelling analysis were obtained at the same point in time. Thus, the temporal order of causation suggested by Model 2 remains theoretically specified. Conclusion: This study provides some first steps in understanding the complex relation between cognition and social function. Such a relation has potential implications for the design of remediation strategies.

Social cognition and learning potential have been proposed as mediating variables between neurocognition and functional outcome in schizophrenia. The present study examined this relation in a schizophrenia group (N 5 26) with normal IQ. Neurocognition was measured with a composite score from tests of verbal learning, psychomotor speed, and executive functioning. Functional outcome was defined as social problem-solving skills and assessed with a role-play test. Social cognition was indexed by tests of visual and auditory emotion perception; and learning potential by estimating a gain score using a triple administration of the WCST. Neurocognition was confirmed to be a strong predictor of social problem-solving, and emotion perception was related to both neurocognition and social problem-solving. When controlling for emotion perception, the association between neurocognition and social problem-solving was weakened, implying a mediating role of emotion perception. Learning potential was not significantly related to neurocognition or social problem-solving, and thus not found to mediate the studied relation. In conclusion, our study indicates that emotion perception is a mediator between neurocognition and functional outcome as assessed with a social problem-solving task and thus a key factor in understanding functional outcome of schizophrenia. A revision of observational and cognitive measures for assessing social anxietyAbstract: Nowadays, a considerable number of self-report instruments assess cognitive and observational aspects of social anxiety disorder which makes it diffi cult for researchers and clinicians to remain actualized. To bridge this gap, this study concerns revising existing instruments of social anxiety measures, specifi cally observational and cognitive assessment tools for a population with social anxiety. The fi ndings reveal that, notwithstanding existing instruments, further studies are needed that examine psychometric properties in different ranges of age, culture, and populations.Keywords: Social phobia; social anxiety; observational assessment; cognitive assessment; self-report instruments; role-playing.Resumen: En los últimos años existe un elevado número de instrumentos de evaluación que han examinado aspectos observacionales y cognitivos del trastorno de ansiedad social, lo que difi culta que investigadores y clínicos puedan estar actualizados. Además, teme ser negativamente evaluada a partir de su actuación o de los síntomas de ansiedad que muestra, lo que implica humillación o vergüenza, rechazo por parte de otros u ofender a otros.
