Assessment ofCandidaspecies colonization and denture-related stomatitis in complete denture wearers

Abstract: Candida species are considered the primary causative agents of denture stomatitis, but their role in colonization and disease in denture wearers remains undefined. In this study, we investigated risk factors associated with progression to Candida-related denture stomatitis in patients using complete dentures, and we genetically identified Candida isolates associated with disease and colonization. We recruited 114 retirement home residents for this study, from whom oral mucosa samples were collected and culture… Show more

“…In this sense, denture hygiene simulating the overnight immersion (8 h) represents a common situation for patients, as dentists commonly recommend denture removal during the sleeping period and immersion in solutions in order to relieve the underlying tissues and clean the dentures (18). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the alterations of color, flexural strength and surface roughness of acrylic resin after immersion in solutions of NaOCl and alkaline peroxide, simulating an overnight use for one year and a half.…”

“…Chronic atrophic candidiasis, also known as Candidaassociated denture stomatitis, is a very common disease affecting 15% to over 70% of the denture wearers [1][2][3][4][5][6] . Candida albicans has been known as the most frequently isolated Candida species responsible for this inflammatory pathology 2,[4][5][6] .…”

“…Candida albicans has been known as the most frequently isolated Candida species responsible for this inflammatory pathology 2,[4][5][6] . The adherence of C. albicans to acrylic resin denture base (polymethyl methacrylate -PMMA) has been thought to be the first step for successful colonization before subsequent plaque formation and development of pathogenesis 7,8) .…”
