AbSTRCTIn the present paper an attempt has been made to study of physico-chemical parameters of downstream in Ukai, Tapi River (Gujarat). For this study the water samples were collected at monthly interval during December 2012 to November 2013 and important water quality parameters were analyzed. Study revealed that temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, nitrate-n, total hardness, fluoride, chloride, total alkalinity and sodium were within the permissible limits whereas turbidity, biological oxygen demand, nitrite-n ammonia, phosphate and potassium were beyond the permissible limits of state, national and international authorities like GPCB, CPCB WHO and USEPA. These result depicted that water body was polluted in the form of nutrient enrichment which is due to agricultural activities and its runoff in and around catchment area of downstream.

Integrated approaches of water quality indices, multivariate statistical analysis, and geostatistical technique were applied to examine the groundwater quality and hydrochemical processes in Lagos, Nigeria. Fifteen samples each were randomly collected from peri-urban, rural, and urban settlements totaling 45 samples from protected dug wells during dry and wet seasons. Samples were analyzed for physicochemical parameters, anion, and cation using standard method. The result shows that 95.6% of the samples during the dry season had pH below the minimum guideline for drinking water. Factor analysis explained 73.5% and 84.2% of the variance during dry and wet seasons, respectively, and extracted two factors-salinity and weathering of minerals. Gibbs plot indicates rock-weathering process as the mechanism controlling the groundwater system. Drinking water quality index shows excellent quality. Revelle index indicates that 6.6% of the samples are strongly affected by salinity during the wet season. One-quarter of sample indicate very severe corrosion based on the water stability index in both seasons. The Piper's plot delineated four facies with primary hardness and mixed waters being the dominant during the dry and wet seasons, respectively. The study concludes that the groundwater is suitable for drinking. The study contributes to knowledge in the mapping of groundwater salinization and water stability indices and delineation of water types for information dissemination with a view to ensuring effective groundwater quality management. A policy that will ensure adequate protection of groundwater pollution from leachates, salinity, and anthropogenic impacts was recommended for sustainable groundwater use in the region.

Determination of make-up cooling water scaling and corrosion potentials for power plants is essential to prevent cooling system fouling challenges linked to source water quality. In this study, a statistical model is proposed to evaluate the probability that scaling or corrosion could occur. These probabilities were determined from derived distributions for the Langelier saturation index (LSI) and the aggressive index (AI), computed from a fitted joint normal distribution for pH, log[Ca 2 + ], log([Ca 2 + ] + [Mg 2 + ]), and log [Alk]. In most cases only one outcome (scaling or corrosion) exhibited a probability of concern, though highly variable source waters could exhibit significant probability for both. To illustrate application of the method, freshwater and treated municipal wastewater samples collected from the western Pennsylvanian region were analyzed for alkalinity, pH, [Mg 2 + ] and [Ca 2 + ] concentrations. The LSI and AI were calculated using the measured characteristics of the water samples, and their observed distributions were compared to the derived normal distributions for each. This study used the uncertainty associated with water quality inputs to evaluate the uncertainty of scaling and corrosion potentials, and provides a practical approach for power plant operators to evaluate the uncertainty associated with scaling and corrosion indices of cooling waters without use of expensive software or complicated coding.
