Assessment of global motor performance and gross and fine motor skills of infants attending day care centers

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the global motor performance and the gross and fine motor skills of infants attending two public child care centers full-time. Methods: This was a longitudinal study that included 30 infants assessed at 12 and 17 months of age with the Motor Scale of the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III). This scale allows the analysis of global motor performance, fine and gross motor performance, and the discrepancy between them. The Wilcoxon test and Spearman's … Show more

“…According to the dynamical systems theory, the motor development of children results from changes in a complex system, under the influence of multiple components 30,31 . However, these changes do not occur in a linear pattern 32 . In other words, temporospatial parameters of gait may be altered without modification of body mass or leg length.…”

“…The diagnostic scale has five independent scales: cognition, language, motor, social-emotional and behavioural-adaptive, and can be used for children from zero to 42 months. This scale has frequently been used in the Brazilian population; despite not being translated from English to Portuguese it is adapted to the population, because it is a reference scale, making it possible to obtain detailed information about neurodevelopment [10][11][12] . The beginning of the evaluation is associated with the child's age, according to the registration records.…”

“…Estudos na área do desenvolvimento motor em idade escolar reforçam que as crianças estão com um atraso motor nas diferentes habilidades, como no equilíbrio [11,12], na locomoção e na manipulação de objetos [13]. Esse atraso no desenvolvimento é observado em diferentes regiões (central/ periférica) e independentemente do contexto de ensino (público/ privado) [14].…”
