Assessment of Clinical Outcomes and Patient Response to Gingival Depigmentation by Scalpel Surgical Stripping and Diode Laser: A Randomized Split-Mouth Study

Abstract: Oral melanin pigmentation is a ubiquitous presentation in the oral cavity. It could be a cause of psychological distress to many subjects due to aesthetic reasons. Aims and Objectives: This study attempts to compare the laser and scalpel depigmentation techniques. It also includes a comparison related to the Visual Analog Scale, patient comfort, healing response and time taken for the procedure and recurrence of pigmentation. Materials and Methods: A total of 10 patients were included in the study. A split-mou… Show more

“…The study recruitment was from the outpatient dental clinics of the Based on the study of Chhina et al in 2019, the VAS was checked at 1 st , and 7 th day postoperatively. On the 1st day, 2.5 ±0.515 of patients reported pain and 0.7 was the clinical most important difference based on expert opinion (Chhina et al, 2019) , Using power 80% and p value: 0.05 as significance level, the number of patients that were enrolled to the study were 10 in each group with 20% more allocated to overcome dropouts, accordingly the number was 12 in each group with 24 patients in the study. Sample size calculation was achieved using Independent T test.…”

“…The increased activity of A power analysis was designed to have adequate power to apply a two-sided statistical test of the null hypothesis that there is no difference would be found between different tested groups. By adopting an alpha (α) level of 0.05 (5%), a beta (β) level of 0.2 (i.e., power = 80%), and an effect size (d) of (1.931) calculated based on the results of a previous study with the same primary outcome [9]; the predicted sample size (n) was a total of (6) cases. Sample size was increased by (25%) to compensate for possible drop-out during different follow up intervals to be a total of (8) cases.…”

“…Enhanced esthetics is the primary indication for demand of depigmentation procedure. [ 4 ] Literature evidence shows various methods of depigmentation, such as scalpel surgery, cryosurgery, electrosurgery, chemical methods, and lasers of different kinds such as neodymium, aluminum-yttrium-garnet (Nd-YAG) lasers, diode lasers, erbium-YAG lasers, and carbon dioxide (CO2).
