Assessment of anti-arthritic potential of Ephedra gerardiana by in vitro and in vivo methods

Abstract: <p class="Abstract">The present study determines the anti-arthritic potential of Ephedra gerardiana ethanolic extract and its ethyl acetate, n-butanol and aqueous fractions adopting in vitro and in vivo tests. In vitro tests included thermally induced bovine serum albumin denaturation and egg albumin denaturation, also membrane stabilizing assay at concentration of 50-6400 µg/mL, whereas in vivo study comprised formaldehyde-induced arthritis at 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg doses. The crude extract and fractions… Show more

“…The red blood cell membrane presents a certain physiological similarity to the lysosomal membrane, which might be injured and lysed by the action of hypotonic solution or heat. Drugs might inhibit hemolysis and prevent tissue damage, suggesting an anti‐inflammatory action (Daram et al., 2021; Uttra & Alamgeer, 2017). Some of the mechanisms described in some drugs that exert membrane stabilization effect on erythrocyte membrane are due to the increase of the surface area of the cell, alteration of calcium influx, or the direct interaction with membrane proteins, like tropomyosin, to avoid cell shrinkage (Uttra & Alamgeer, 2017).…”

“…The poor quality of the drug and lack of standardization are the two weaknesses that lie behind the acceptance of herbal products which results in the decreased market value of the product. So, there is a need to develop an Herbal Authentication System (HAS) which can serve as a regulator and helps in improving the quality of herbal trade (Uttra, 2017).…”
