Assessing the Vulnerability of Megaprojects Using Complex Network Theory

Abstract: This article examines the vulnerability of megaprojects using complex network theory. The megaproject is first abstracted as a weighted directed network, after which a novel vulnerability metric is designed to quantify megaproject vulnerability. The proposed approach is then applied to a megaproject, which demonstrates its effectiveness in assessing vulnerability and identifying critical projects. Several protection strategies are finally proposed to enhance megaproject management. Overall, this study proposes… Show more

“…In the research on megaprojects, research on organizational output (e.g. project success) from a network perspective is an important topic (Cao et al , 2018; Guo et al , 2020; Xue et al , 2018). However, research on the relationship between network position and project performance has not been published.…”

“…They also have different core capabilities and none of these stakeholders have complete knowledge and all capabilities required to achieve project delivery on their own (Li et al , 2019). Therefore, collaborative relationships are established and a huge collaborative network is formed to achieve project success (Guo et al , 2020; Zhang et al , 2021). The collaborative network of megaprojects plays a vital role for project implementation.…”

“…Successes and failures of megaprojects always point to the directions of the government of the day. Hence, governments have a responsibility of ensuring that there is a smooth implementation of these projects, which can be achieved through engaging all stakeholders and risk management (Guo et al 2020). Further to this, Esposito et al (2021) affirmed that the large-scale developments should be aligned with an overarching institutional strategy that coordinates stakeholder involvement across all spectrums.…”

“…The relationship between complexity and decision-making is explored with the management science technique of gaming by Rumeser and Emsley (2019). Guo et al (2020) consider megaproject vulnerability in light of complex network theory and then experiment to inform readers of the implications. Math programming serves as a tool in the study of risk response planning (Ahmadi-Javid et al, 2020).…”
