Assessing the Value of ChatGPT for Clinical Decision Support Optimization

Abstract: Objective: To determine if ChatGPT can generate useful suggestions for improving clinical decision support (CDS) logic and to assess noninferiority compared to human-generated suggestions. Methods: We supplied summaries of CDS logic to ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool for question answering that uses a large language model, and asked it to generate suggestions. We asked human clinician reviewers to review the AI-generated suggestions as well as human-generated suggestions for improving the same CD… Show more

“…The letters are evaluated from the perspective of factual correctness and humanness by clinicians, and ChatGPT achieved high scores on both criteria. In [68], ChatGPT is supplied with seven types of clinical decision support (CDS) alerts (e.g., pediatrics bronchiolitis, immunization, postoperative anesthesia nausea and vomiting, etc.) and asked to give suggestions.…”

“…It can be useful for tests, final diagnoses, and management using clinical vignettes with a variety of age, gender identity, and emergency severity indices. 23 ChatGPT can generate useful suggestions for improving clinical decision support logic that are “…highly understandable and relevant…” 24 Future potential uses of AI for clinical practice include real-time monitoring of vital signs and laboratory values to identify patterns and trends. This pattern recognition could allow early intervention, personalized treatment recommendations, and triage of patients through telemedicine.…”

“…The daunting challenge requires critical and insightful analysis of the data by expert minds to discern reliable data, which is not simply possible by text mining. In clinical medicine, the preliminary studies suggest that ChatGPT could generate reasonably but not perfectly accurate responses to medical questions, write patient clinic letters, or summarize discharge notes [2][3][4][5][6] . However, all ChatGPTgenerated medical documents must be reviewed and verified by experts.…”
