Assessing the Utility of Sentinel-1 Coherence Time Series for Temperate and Tropical Forest Mapping

Abstract: This study tested the ability of Sentinel-1 C-band to separate forest from other common land use classes (i.e., urban, low vegetation and water) at two different sites. The first site is characterized by temperate forests and rough terrain while the second by tropical forest and near-flat terrain. We trained a support vector machine classifier using increasing feature sets starting from annual backscatter statistics (average, standard deviation) and adding long-term coherence (i.e., coherence estimate for two … Show more

“…Considering that forests also have relative high LSWI_TP values (see Fig. 3G), we first identified forest category using information from the VH signal (Borlaf‐Mena et al., 2021). A map of the annual frequencies of VH values > −20 (see Fig.…”

“…In Kaplan and Kaplan [26] preference matrix, coherence is one of the four aspects of aesthetic evaluation, and it has an impact on the immediate understanding or sense-making of information emerging from a two-dimensional landscape. In forest aesthetics, coherence describes the unity of a scene, repeated patterns of colour and texture, and the correspondence between land use and natural circumstances [53]. Scenic unity or coherence ensures that a scene will be viewed as suitable and harmonious to its surroundings [54].…”

“…The computation of SAR coherence between different dates is very useful for temporal analysis as well as for unwrapping interferometric SAR phases (Abdelfattah et al, 2001;Zhang et al, 2019). It has been shown that land cover mapping results were improved when temporal coherence features were added to backscatter coefficients (Borlaf-Mena et al, 2021;Nikaein et al, 2021). Yet, the information captured in a coherence matrix is still poorly understood, and one can ask if land cover mapping classification can be solved only from temporal (normalized) coherence patterns.…”
