Assessing the State of Structural Foundations in Permafrost Regions by Means of Acoustic Testing

Abstract: About 60% of the territory of the Russian Federation is covered by permafrost. Additionally, a large share of the country’s mineral and hydrocarbon deposits are located in the Arctic. Climate change that has been happening over the past few decades has had a serious impact on the conditions in which permafrost soils are found. Changes in temperatures in permafrost regions, along with the human impact from mining and processing, have led to an increase in accidents caused by the degradation of permafrost founda… Show more

“…Additional questions arise about waste management in the fields of Western Siberia. The swampy terrain, permafrost soils, and the frequent use of trucks may lead to problems such as erosion and soil degradation [111,112]. Maintenance of well pads and in-field embankment roads becomes necessary.…”

“…The DME is an effective indicator for evaluating the internal damage of concrete, and the testing of dynamic modulus is a nondestructive test. Therefore, specimens used for durability testing can be used for non-destructive testing [20]. This experiment tests the change in the dynamic modulus of concrete as an indicator reflecting the comprehensive durability failure of concrete.…”

“…To evaluate the length and integrity of driven piles, a non-destructive low strain impact integrity test is implemented, which is based on the analysis of the propagation of elastic waves induced in a pile body by a hammer blow [12][13][14][15][16][17]. However, the ASTM D5882 standard states that the integrity evaluation of a pile section below a manufactured mechanical joint is not normally possible since the impact wave likely will reflect completely at the discontinuity [18].…”
