The increasing microplastic (MP) pollution in the marine environment has raised global concern. The main risk of MPs in aquatic ecosystem is their bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms. While some studies reported MPs pollution in the digestive system of the Caspian Sea fish species, there is no research on sturgeon species, nor on fish gills. Here, we investigated the occurrence of MPs in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and gills of 62 specimens belonging to four species including three teleosts (Cyprinus carpio, Rutilus kutum and Chelon aurata) and one sturgeon (Acipenser persicus, a valuable endangered species) from the Caspian Sea between January and March 2022. Fish tissues were removed, exposed for 24 h to 10 % KOH and then dried on the filter papers. Particles were observed under stereomicroscope and analyzed by Raman micro‐spectrometry, SEM and EDS. A total of 91 MPs were detected in GIT (averaged 1.46 ± 1.17 items/individual) and 63 MPs in gills (averaged 1.01 ± 0.62 items/individual). There was not significant correlation between the number of MPs found in the both tissues and the fish body length, body weight, GIT weight and gill weight (P > 0.05), except between MPs isolated from gills and gill weight in C. carpio (rs = 0.707, P = 0.022). MPs abundance in the fish followed the order of A. persicus > C. aurata > R. kutum > C. carpio. MPs were found in the size range of 45−5000 µm and the particles with 300‒1000 µm in size were the most prevalent. MPs were common by fiber (74.68 %) in shape, red (30.53 %) in color and nylon (70.6 %) in polymer.

Abstrak-Mikroplastik (MPs) merupakan polimer sintetis berukuran kurang dari 5 mm. Peningkatan limbah plastik di perairan dan kecilnya ukuran MPs menyebabkan potensi untuk masuk dan terakumulasinya MPs tersebut dalam tubuh ikan. Bioakumulasi MPs dapat menimbulkan dampak fisiologis negatif terhadap ikan dan juga konsumennya, termasuk manusia. Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengetahui bioakumulasi MPs pada daging ikan Nila (Oreochromis niloticus) periode 1 (umur 2 bulan) dan periode 2 (umur 4 bulan) setelah tebar di Keramba Jaring Apung (KJA) di Ranu Grati, Pasuruan; juga membandingkannya dengan konsentrasi MPs di air dalam KJA. Parameter pengamatan adalah jumlah dan karakter fisik (bentuk, ukuran dan warna) MPs. Perbandingan konsentrasi MPs pada ikan nila periode 1 dan periode 2 akan dianalisis dengan uji Mann Whitney U pada selang kepercayaan 95%. Sampel air KJA pada periode 1 dan periode 2 menunjukkan kelimpahan MPs sebanyak 12 partikel/100 liter dan 21 partikel/100 liter dengan panjang rata-rata panjang 958,57 µm dan 922,09 µm secara berturutturut, sebagian besar dalam rentang ukuran 100-1000 µm. Sampel air KJA pada kedua periode menunjukkan dominasi bentuk MPs fiber dan warna MPs biru. Sampel daging ikan nila pada periode 1 dan periode 2 menunjukkan kelimpahan MPs 510 partikel dan 330 partikel dengan panjang rata-rata 1404,5 + 1481,7 µm dan 1028,9 + 1009,4 µm secara berturutturut, sebagian besar dalam rentang ukuran 1000-5000 µm. Jumlah MPs per satuan massa pada grup periode 1 adalah 2,1 partikel/g; jumlah MPs per satuan massa pada grup periode 2 adalah 0,3 partikel/g. Sampel daging pada kedua periode menunjukkan dominasi bentuk MPs fiber dan warna MPs biru.

Aquatic communities, as one of the sources of human food supply, are affected by various environmental threats, among which the accumulation of microplastics has attracted concerns about their acute affect. This pollution is a threat to wildlife and can have serious economic effects; notwithstanding the increase in international attention, the presence of these materials in the environment is a hazardous problem due to the increasing of plastic production in the world and inadequate disposal of plastic waste. Previous studies were reported the presence of microplastics in the water column and offshore sediments worldwide. The life span, durability, and strength of plastics are estimated at tens of years to hundreds of years, which significantly lead to micro-plastic contamination. Due to the buoyancy and durability of microplastics, these particles accumulate throughout the aquatic environment and human food chain through fish or other aquatic organisms, which can cause various types of cancer, digestive problems, and reduced fertility.
