Assessing the Prevalence of Latent Tuberculosis among Health Care Providers in Zagazig City, Egypt Using Tuberculin Skin Test and QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube Test

Abstract: QFT-GIT is considered a useful tool in detecting LTBI cases, especially in a country where BCG vaccination is a national policy (as in Egypt). Duration of work, profession, diabetes and smoking are the risk factors for LTBI. Active surveillance and infection control measures are recommended to reduce the risk of LTBI.

“…In the subgroup analysis by study location, the pooled effect was significantly higher in studies carried out in Africa and North America, compared with studies carried out in Asia and Europe. HCW was the main population in the Africa group ( 35 ), which was the only study and led a high odds ratio of this group. Population of group North America consisted of refugees ( 33 , 36 ), community residents ( 18 , 22 ), elderly or patients with other chronic diseases ( 40 ) and household contacts ( 25 ).…”

“…The global prevalence of LTBI was estimated at 23.0% in 2014. The South-East Asia Region had the highest prevalence of 30.8% 19 . The current lifetime risk of progression from LTBI to active TB disease is 5–15% 20 .…”

“…There is a demand for more specific detection of human and bovine TB, which are caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis, respectively, infecting the lungs and other organs. The 2015 global TB report estimated that 3.6 million cases of human TB were missed by health systems, and inaccurate diagnosis was considered to be one of the main factors causing this omission. , Therefore, a more effective and accurate diagnostic test is important for control of TB infection and transmission worldwide. ,,, Tuberculin skin testing (TST) is a primary diagnostic tool for both human and bovine TB and is used in programs for eradication of the disease in cattle throughout the world. However, false positive results can be obtained if humans or animals are exposed to nonpathogenic environmental mycobacteria or vaccinated with BCG. Therefore, a new, highly accurate diagnostic reagent containing specific TB antigens is required to overcome the low specificity of TST .…”
