Assessing the Prevalence and Association of Pulp Stones with Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes Mellitus in the Saudi Arabian Population—A CBCT Based Study

Abstract: The detection of pulp stone in a patient suffering from undiagnosed systemic diseases can be an early diagnostic indicator. Thus, the aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of pulp stones in the Saudi Arabian population with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. In a retrospective study, we included cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 73 patients with cardiovascular disease and 76 patients with diabetes mellitus as group I and II, respectively. Group III comprised of CBCT scan of 80 h… Show more

“…The proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin 1 beta, and the calcium-dependent cytokines S100A8 and S100A9, which promote cytokine production, are up-regulated in dental pulp of diabetic rats 15 . An intriguing phenomenon related to the altered state of inflammation is pulp stones, which are observed in maxillary teeth more frequently in diabetic patients than healthy ones 16,17 . Pulp stones are generally thought of as a dental pulp defense mechanism triggered by constant irritation and inflammation.…”

“…This eventually assist the clinician to plan, treat and make referral for systemic conditions. [16], [17] By analyzing the resulting radiographic images with distinct patterns of intensity fluctuations, computer-aided image analysis may be able to identify aberrant tissue masses. Automatic segmentation will simplify lesion analysis, making it easier to spot and identify lesions in the clinic.…”

“…Recently, relation between pulp stones and hypertension have also been established. 4 Dental pulp cells have the ability to react to local and systemic stimuli by activating osteopontin, forming pulp calcifications, obstructing root canals, and changing internal anatomy. In people with diabetes mellitus, these responses are exacerbated by the dental pulp cells' ability to do these things.…”
