HIGHLIGHTS The performance of packed bed reactor running on babassu oil to yield ethyl esters was assessed. Burkholderia cepacia lipase immobilized on SiO2-PVA composite was used as a catalyst. The molar ratio of babassu oil and ethanol was found as a critical parameter for attaining high yields. The transesterification reaction of babassu oil with ethanol mediated by Burkholderia cepacia lipase immobilized on SiO2-PVA composite was assessed in a packed bed reactor running in the continuous mode. Experiments were performed in a solvent-free system at 50 °C. The performance of the reactor (14 mm ×210 mm) was evaluated using babassu oil and ethanol at two molar ratios of 1:7 and 1:12, respectively, and operational limits in terms of substrate flow rate were determined. The system's performance was quantified for different flow rates corresponding to space times between 7 and 13 h. Under each condition, the impact of the space time on the ethyl esters formation, the transesterification yield and productivity were determined. The oil to ethanol molar ratio was found as a critical parameter in the conversion of babassu oil into the correspondent ethyl esters. The highest transesterification yield of 96.0 ± 0.9% and productivity of 41.1 ± 1.6 mgestergcatalystwere achieved at the oil to ethanol molar ratio of 1:12 and for space times equal or higher than 11 h. Moreover, the immobilized lipase was found stable with respect to its catalytic characteristics, exhibiting a half-life of 32 d.

A sustentabilidade de uma atividade econômica está associada à aceitação cultural, viabilidade econômica, justiça social e ao ecologicamente correto. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a situação social da comunidade de Axixá do Tocantins, TO, Brasil, e seu potencial de gerar renda para propor uma atividade sustentável. As “quebradeiras de coco”, grupo de cultura local, apresenta uma situação social precária. Elas catam frutos do babaçu (Orbignya spp.) da região e retiram suas amêndoas com auxílio de machado e bastão de madeira. As amêndoas são torradas em chapas metálicas aquecidas, trituradas em pilão e cozidas em água para liberação do óleo. O óleo desprendido sobrenada e é retirado após o resfriamento do caldeirão, sendo comercializado a baixo custo no local. No entanto, um bom potencial de aumentar a renda de vários desses moradores é possível por meio da transferência de tecnologia de extração do óleo por prensagem a frio de babaçu, com o devido respeito àquela realidade sociocultural. Nesse sentido, uma ação de política pública afirmativa para instalação de uma microindústria química pode recuperar o investimento em cerca de três anos, considerando a produção de óleo extravirgem e condições mais favoráveis de sua comercialização, o que também garantirá a manutenção das matas desta palmeira.

Scaling up the Bioconversion of Cheese Whey Permeate into Fungal Oil by Mucor circinelloides

The bioconversion of hydrolyzed whey permeate into an oil‐rich biomass by Mucor circinelloides was scaled up from 250 mL to 4 L with the use of an aerated stirred tank bioreactor. Biomass production and oil accumulation were strongly influenced by agitation speed (99–451 rpm) and aeration rate (0.29–1.70 vvm). Higher agitation and aeration rates (e.g., >400 rpm, >1 vvm), resulted in significantly higher biomass yield due to increased oxygen transfer capabilities and better mixing. Additionally, oil accumulation in the fungal biomass was related to high agitation (>400 rpm), while aeration (0.5–1.5 vvm) had no significant effect within the range evaluated. The predictive model was validated at the optimal conditions of 450 rpm and 1 vvm. Maximum biomass yield of 10.7 g L−1 and lipid content of 32% dry biomass were achieved during 120 hours of fermentation. Simultaneous optimization of agitation and aeration in a bioreactor was found to not only improve fungal growth but also lipid content (24% vs. 32%), lipid yield (2.2 vs. 3.1 g L−1) and γ‐linoleic production (73–464 mg L−1) compared to that of shake‐flask. This study resulted in a scaled‐up and optimized fermentation process that increased production of M. circinelloides biomass for subsequent use as raw material for food, feed, and fuel applications. This signifies a starting point for further studies aimed at assessing the development of a fully functioning fungi‐to‐food/fuel system on an industrial scale for several agricultural streams.
