Assessing the impact of inter-vehicle communication protocols on road traffic safety

Abstract: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will change the experience of driving in the near future. Most applications will use wireless communication (cellular or ad-hoc) for being able to provide the required services. Usually performance evaluations of communication protocols are conducted with typical network metrics like delay, jitter, or goodput for example. However, in the context of ITS it has been shown that network metrics are not sufficient to evaluate vehicular safety applications. Therefore, we exte… Show more

“…For a detailed description we refer the reader to IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.11p [18,15,53] and the actual standardization documents [25] and [24]. The level of detail in Veins' MAC and PHY layer implementation allows researchers to conduct various simulation studies, e.g., comparing wireless network performance [14,57], studying the applicability of the wireless network for vehicular cooperative safety [26] (Section 3.2) or the analysis of platoons [50] (Section 3.1).…”

“…Depending on the vehicular safety application under investigation simulation time steps between 1 ms and 100 ms will be reasonable. For a detailed analysis of the simulation time step we refer the reader to the literature [26]. In the following, insights on how Veins can be used to research safety metrics and situation-aware communication for IAS are shared.…”
