Assessing temporal and weather influences on property crime in Beijing, China

Abstract: Though the relationships between environment and crime have been studied a lot in many countries, this work is still a void in China. This work presents the study about how property crimes are influenced by the temporal and weather factors in China. With the crime data collected from police, the property crimes pattern by season of year, day of week and time of day are investigated firstly. Then the influence of the temporal variables-major holidays, school close days and weekends-and weather on the crimes are… Show more

“…Indeed, relationships between crime and meteorological conditions as well as the routine activity of a society have been repeatedly found in the extant literature and ultimately shape the opportunity structure for crime to occur. For example, holidays, extreme weather conditions, and exceptional events have all been shown to influence crime patterns (e.g., Chen et al, 2011 ; Cohn & Rotton, 2003 ; Decker et al, 2007 ; Kurland & Johnson, 2021 ; Kurland et al, 2014 ), and not taking account of these in one’s model may lead to less reliable forecasts. 4…”

“…Collectively, empirical findings suggest that climatological and meteorological variations are associated with patterns of crime, some of which are seasonal. However the relationships are far from clear cut; to date there is little consensus on the directions of the relationships observed and the mechanisms through which weather might exert its influence (Block 1984;Peng et al 2011;Yan 2004). Ostensibly, the impact of weather across different locales and microclimates is not constant; a premise which underpins the current study.…”

“…Each term is followed by 2 or more weeks of vacation when schools are closed. Previous research both in the United States and China (Peng, Xueming, Hongyong, & Dengsheng, 2011) Figure 1. Fourier analysis of violent and property crimes in Tshwane (2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006).…”

“…Each term is followed by two or more weeks of vacation when schools are closed. Previous research both in the United States and China (Peng, Xueming, Hongyong, & Dengsheng, 2011) has demonstrated an increase in crime during periods of school closings and holidays. This appears consistent with RA theory as the occurrence of school holidays can result in changes in routine or typical activities of people, thus increasing the probability that individuals will be vulnerable to certain types of criminal victimization or will be motivated to engage in crime.…”
