Assessing spatial and attribute errors in large national datasets for population distribution models: a case study of Philadelphia county schools

Abstract: Geospatial technologies and digital data have developed and disseminated rapidly in conjunction with increasing computing efficiency and Internet availability. The ability to store and transmit large datasets has encouraged the development of national infrastructure datasets in geospatial formats. National datasets are used by numerous agencies for analysis and modeling purposes because these datasets are standardized and considered to be of acceptable accuracy for national scale applications. At Oak Ridge Nat… Show more

“…The Landscan project is notable for providing nighttime and daytime dasymetric population map products (Bhaduri et al. 2007), however, these researchers have also noted the challenge associated with acquiring accurate daytime base population data for parameterizing dasymetric models (Patterson et al. 2007).…”

“…Ternary diagrams are a graphical technique, which is common in various disciplines (e.g., demography, geography, chemistry, or pedology). They are used to represent trivariate data in which the three variables represent proportions of a whole (Graham & Midgley, 2000), such as the composition of a territorially bounded population by age (adolescent, adult, retired) or ethnicity (Plewe & Bagchi‐Sen, 2001), or the composition of a population of schoolchildren according to public, private, or post‐secondary schools (Patterson et al, 2007). In the context of PMOs, serving, controlling, and partnering are clearly exclusive role elements that combine into an aggregate role profile.…”

“…School location and enrollment data in Philadelphia was obtained by integrating various school databases from the Tele Atlas North America (TANA) Dynamap 2000, the School District of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Philadelphia Yellow Pages, and the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES); see Patterson et al (2007). Although no single database was found to be completely comprehensive, they overlapped in content, and each provided one or more attributes of the school situation in Philadelphia, such as school name, location, and enrollment by school type.…”
