Assessing Sedentary Behavior with the GENEActiv

Abstract: The Sedentary Sphere enables determination of the most likely posture from the wrist-worn GENEActiv. Visualizing behaviors on the sphere displays the pattern of wrist movement and positions within that behavior.

“…Through the model development processes, researchers also recognised that PAEE was not the only outcome variable that could be extracted from acceleration signals. With the implementation of piezoresistive and capacitive accelerometer transducers, static acceleration (the direct current or DC component) from the raw signals can be used to estimate limb angles and thus infer postures 11. Combining the positional information with the movement acceleration data (the alternating current or AC component) in orthogonal directions provides rich feature sets that allow modelling experts and statisticians to utilise the power of pattern recognition, machine learning and fusion of different techniques to respond to an ever-expanding application field 12.…”

“…25,26 Furthermore, accelerometers can be inaccurate in distinguishing sitting from standing, 14 although those that include inclinometers could mitigate this concern. New analytic techniques are being developed that identify, analyze, and visually present sedentary behaviors from wristworn triaxial accelerometers 28 and that are capable of assessing posture by including inclinometers. [29][30][31][32][33] Other methods in development include inclinometers that are combined with cameras to assess body position and estimate sedentary behavior.…”

“…Most studies classify SB as ≀1.5 metabolic equivalent tasks (METs) (Ainsworth et al 2000;Owen et al 2010;Pate et al 2008;Rowlands et al 2013;Tremblay et al 2010); however, certain light intensity physical activities (LIPAs) (standing) can elicit similar MET values (Ainsworth et al 2000). 'Sedentary' originates from 'sedere', Latin for 'to sit'.…”
