Lead contamination in China has been extensively documented by scientists in China and elsewhere over the past two decades, as summarized in this review of articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Sources of that contamination include (a) deposits from previous emissions of leaded gasoline, which was finally eliminated in the past decade; (b) previous and continuing emissions from fossil fuel combustion, which are increasing markedly with the rapid industrialization of China; (c) previous and continuing emissions from other industrial activities, including mining, smelting and municipal waste incineration; and (d) previous and continuing additions of contaminated fertilizers, sewage, and untreated wastewater to agricultural fields. Lead concentrations of some Chinese agricultural produce are also elevated by acid rain and acidic fertilizers, which increase the solubility and bioavailability of both natural and contaminant lead in soil. In addition, some Chinese products are contaminated with lead during their production, processing, packaging, and transport. As a consequence of the long-range transport of industrial lead emissions from China and the global market for its products, the problem of lead pollution in China is a global problem.

Analysis of nine composite soil samples, each made of three replicate core samples and their respective background samples collected from Okigwe, Nekede and Orji automobile mechanic villages were conducted. Metal concentrations (mg/kg) above the background levels in the top 100 cm soil profile ranges as follows: 748-70,606 (± 10114.3) for iron; 99-1090 ± 251.3 for lead; 186-600 ± 180 for manganese; 102-1001± 201.9 for copper; 8-23 ± 12.9 for cadmium; 4-27 ± 6.0 for chromium; and 3-10 ± 2.2 for nickel. The order of abundance is: iron > lead > manganese > copper > cadmium > chromium > nickel, with Okigwe > Nekede > Orji. Pollution indexes show that the metals have similar pollution trends in the three layers (L -L ), with L (0-10 cm) > L (10-20 cm) > L (90-100 cm) in Okigwe, L

Flow slides in the municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill are common geological disasters that have the potential to cause loss of life, destruction of property, and damage to the natural environment in the surrounding region. In this work, a mixture of peat, kaolin clay and quartz sand was used as a model test material to simulate MSW. A series of physical model tests on MSW simulant flows was carried out to capture the run-out behavior of the waste and analyze its mobility. The testing assembly consisted of a transparent model box, a steel frame and a highspeed camera. Flow failure was induced by lifting up a baffle to cause the MSW simulant to collapse and flow. Images of the flowing mass were taken by the high-speed camera. The series of images clearly displays the propagation of MSW simulant flows. The final profile of the MSW simulant and the shape of the deposition area were observed and measured. The run-out distances, final deposit shapes, flow depth, velocities and angle of reach showed significant variation between test configurations, indicating the strong influence of moisture content on overall mobility. The test results obtained can aid in the prediction of distal reach, flow depth and maximum velocity of solid waste following a landfill slope failure, which are necessary for hazard assessment and mitigation planning, and also to provide physical data for theoretical and numerical model verification.
