a b s t r a c tIn this study, Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP) was used to simulate the impacts of various phosphorus (P) load reduction scenarios on nutrient concentrations in Lake Uluabat, a Ramsar site (a wetland of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention), including sediment dredging options and source reduction. The model was calibrated for various water constituents including ortho-phosphate (PO 4 3− ) and nitrate (NO 3 − ). The calibrated model was used as a management tool to predict the nutrient concentrations and water quality conditions in the lake for different P management alternatives. Results indicated that due to heavy sediment load, sediment dredging may be required to improve the water quality and control eutrophication in short term. However, it was observed that partial sediment dredging combined with other P load reduction alternatives could have similar overall effects compared to full sediment dredging in long term. Therefore, partial sediment dredging could be used as an alternative P control strategy when applied together with other P load control options.

A comparative analysis was conducted using three types of data-mining models produced from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra Surface Reflectance 1-day or 8-day composite images to estimate chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations in Lake Okeechobee, Florida. To understand the pros and cons of these three models, a genetic programming (GP) model was compared to an artificial neural network (ANN) model and multiple linear regression (MLR) model with respect to two different data sets related to model formulation. The first data set included the MODIS Terra bands from 1 to 7; the second data set extended the first data set by adding environmental parameters such as Secchi disc depth (SDD), total suspended solids (TSS), wind speed, water level, rainfall and air temperature collected around the lake in 2003 and 2004. The GP algorithm, which has an advantage in machine learning allowing us to select the appropriate input parameters that significantly impact the prediction accuracy, outperformed the other two models based on four statistical indices. Specifically, the GP modelling outputs revealed interesting determinations of chl-a concentrations for MODIS bands 3, 5, 6 and 7, corresponding to wavelengths 459-479, 1230-1250, 1628-1652 and 2105-2155 nm, respectively. The number of training data points is limited; therefore, the inclusion of additional environmental variables cannot improve the prediction accuracy of the GP-derived chl-a concentrations.

Abstract:Interactions between mathematical and biological sciences have been increasing rapidly in recent years. The use of system analysis and mathematical model for formulation and solving the environmental pollution is of relatively recent vintage and has been used widely since last three decades. These models can be used to conduct numerical experiments, test hypothesis and help to understand the response of environmental pollution. A mathematical model acts as a bridge between study of mathematics and application of mathematics in environment and other fields. Modeling is an abstraction of reality and its ultimate objective is to explore the complexity of functions and structure of the system under study. Today, a wide variety of models belonging to different nature and category are available to understand the processes of the environment around us. Various models such as WASP, CE-QUAL-ICM, QUAL W2, AQUATOX, QUAL2K, IITAQ, PEARL, GRAM, UGEM, and IITLT etc. related to water and air quality are developed so far along with their principles, intended use and applications. These models generally simulate the basic physical, chemical and biological processes. In the present study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the concept and utilization of mathematical models in air and water quality management.
