C ompetence is a concept that has been used in the past few decades. Almost in every field, the concept signifies as an essential prerequisite and the readers, with the passage of time, are becoming more aware with this term (Campion et al., 2011). Kallioinen (2010) defined the term as representation of dynamic combination of knowledge and understanding, cognitive skill, practical, intellectual and interpersonal skill.The term competence can be explained as an individual's capacity in some certain situations. It is the power to act with effectiveness in a situation (Perrenoud, 2013;Grgasovi´c and Šoštari, 2022). It is suitable for the students' learning and plan, to promote lifelong learning. They are intangible and Abstract | This piece of research was to assess generic competence in sports sciences students. The measuring instrument comprising 19 items (competences) was adopted from Reflex Project. Total 170 respondents of sports science department and some more sports students from other departments participating in sports activities were conveniently selected as a sample of the study. Mean median, mode and range were calculated to describe the data. The difference between the levels of competence was measured with the help of independent sample t-test. The same was applied on gender and group to observe the difference. The relationship between generic competence and students' grades was found with the help of Pearson correlation. The impact of generic competence and students' grades was observed with the help of multiple regressions. The findings of the study concluded that the level of competence was found the same in male and female students. But, the level of competence was found in few competences when observed group wise. The relationship between generic competence and students' grades was found in few competences. The impact of generic competence and students' grades was also found in few competences. It was recommended that Students' grades made better through focusing on generic competence in curriculum.

Purpose This study aims to identify the gap between the requirements of the accreditation bodies and the widely used learning management systems (LMSs) in assessing the intended learning outcomes (ILOs). In addition, this study aims to introduce a framework, along with the evaluation of the functionality of the LMS, for measuring the ILO. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative method was deployed to examine the gap between the requirements of the accreditation standards and the LMS functionalities. The researchers collaborated to design a mechanism, develop a system architecture to measure the ILO in alignment with the accreditation standards and guide the development of the Moodle plugin. The appropriateness and effectiveness of the plugin were evaluated within the scope of assessment mapping and design. Focus group interviews were conducted to collect feedback from the instructors and program leaders regarding its implementation. Findings The results of this study indicate that there is no standardized mechanism to measure course and program ILO objectively, using the existing LMS. The implementation of the plugin shows the appropriateness and effectiveness of the system in generating ILO achievement reports, which was confirmed by the users. Originality/value This study proposed a framework and developed a system architecture for the objective measurement of the ILO through direct assessment. The plugin was tested to generate consistent reports during the measurement of course and program ILO. The plugin has been implemented across Gulf University’s program courses, ensuring appropriate reporting and continuous improvement.

The effects of normal vaginal birth simulation training on the clinical skills of midwifery students: a quasi-experiment study

Background Vaginal birth management is vital to midwifery education and practice in which midwives are most likely to be directly involved. This situation requires strong cognitive, technical, communicational, and teamwork skills. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of normal vaginal birth simulation training before formal clinical education on the clinical skills of midwifery students compared with routine clinical education. Methods This quasi-experimental study was conducted at the Shoushtar Faculty of Medical Sciences from September 2018 to August 2021. Sixty-one midwifery students participated in the intervention group (n = 31) and in the control group (n = 30). The intervention group participated in the simulation-based training before entering the formal clinical education courses. The control group received no simulation-based training before their formal clinical education. The clinical skills of these students for performing normal vaginal birth in the real field were evaluated by observational examination in the three years (fourth, fifth, and sixth semesters). Data were analyzed by descriptive (mean, SD, and percentage) and inferential statistics (independent t-test and chi-square). A P-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results The mean score of midwives’ skills in the control group was (28.10 ± 3.42) and in the intervention group, it was (31.15 ± 4.30). The difference in the skill score between the groups was statistically significant (3.40 ± 0.68). The results showed that in the intervention group, 29 students (93.93%) were evaluated from a good to an excellent level, while only ten students (32.71%) in the control group achieved a good level, and others (n = 30) were evaluated at a low level (p < .001). Conclusion The results of the present study indicated that the simulation situation for critical skills, such as vaginal birth skills, was significantly more effective than workplace-based learning situations.
