Assessing Criminal Thinking in Male Sex Offenders With the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles

Abstract: A sample of 543 male inmates undergoing sex offender treatment completed the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles (PICTS). As predicted, the PICTS General Criminal Thinking (GCT), Proactive (P), and Reactive (R) scores correlated with sexual risk as measured by the total score on the Static-99. However, only the GCT and P scores correlated with sentence length, and none of the PICTS scores successfully discriminated between a current offense of child molestation and a current offense of adult ra… Show more

“…The generalizability of the current results to sex offenders in the IDOC would appear to be good in that more than 97% of all sex offenders who entered that system between January 1, 2007, and October 31. 2008, were included in the original Walters et al (2009) study. Moreover, a comparison of inmates who served as participants in the current study and those who did not participate because they had not yet been released from prison revealed few meaningful differences between the groups.…”

“…Walters et al's (2011) conceptualization of criminal thinking has been operationalized in scales, scores, and indicators from the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles (PICTS; Walters, 1995). In an attempt to understand the relationship between criminal thinking and sexual offending, Walters, Deming, and Elliott (2009) administered the PICTS to a large group of male offenders undergoing sex offender treatment in the Indiana Department of Corrections (IDOC). Using factor and correlational analysis, they discovered that the PICTS seemed to operate in much the same manner with sex offenders as it did with nonsex offenders.…”

“…The PICTS has been shown to effectively predict recidivism among male and female, federal and state prison, American and English inmates (Walters 2009; Walters and Elliot 1999; Palmer and Hollin 2004a), as well as sexual offenders (Walters et al 2015). The adequate internal consistency, proactive-reactive criminal thinking factor structure, and predictive validity of recidivism in general inmate populations were replicated with a sexual offending inmate sample (Walters et al 2009; Walters et al 2015). …”
