Assessing Bank Competition in Nepal Using Panzar-Rosse Model

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to assess the state of competition in Nepalese banking over the period from 2010 to 2019. This study employs panel data and a non-structural Panzar-Rosse model to measure the degree of competition in the Nepalese banking industry. The first reduced-form equation is applied to gauge competition, and the second model is used to test the long-run equilibrium in the banking market. The finding reveals that the Nepalese banking market is equilibrium in the long-run. It implies that the … Show more

“…These authors derived a test to assess the degree of competitiveness from the estimation of income equations in reduced form. There are different studies that have used the P-R indicator in different empirical contexts [53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60]. One way of comparing the degree of competitiveness existing in the banking markets is through an index constructed as the sum of the elasticities of bank revenues in the face of variation in input prices, this index being known as the H-Statistic [55].…”

“…In many organisations, risk oversight processes are immature, and they must be strengthened to achieve the strategic objectives. Budhathoki et al (2020) highlighted that the markets respond negatively to internal control weaknesses. Rashid et al (2021) found that internal control techniques aid in improving financial performance.…”

“…Extending the discussion of the comparative literature review, the study of Budhathoki et al (2020) arranged an empirical analysis on the Nepalese banking sector and examine the trend of competition across the banks. They conjectured that Nepalese banks are working under the situation of perfect competition and have shifted from the monopolistic nature of competition to perfect competition.…”
