Assesment of Sawmill and other Associated Wastes on the Water Quality of Ilo-abuchi Creek, Rivers State, Niger Delta

Abstract: A study was conducted on physicochemical parameters water from Ilo-abuchi, creek Niger Delta, Nigeria. The study aimed at evaluating the impact of sawmills and other associated wastes on water quality of the creek. The physicochemical parameters investigated were from February to July 2020 and the samples were analysed for pH, Temperature, Salinity, Conductivity, Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and Total alkalinity using an in-situ Handheld Multimeter (Milwaukee Model pH600 and Labor… Show more

“…Wood shavings and leachates are responsible for the release of inert solids and toxic pollutants, directly obstructing fish gills and indirectly reducing light penetration. This limitation in productivity contaminates the aquatic environment and weakens the immune systems of aquatic organisms, making fish more susceptible to parasites [5,6,7]. Wood residue leachate, characterized by its black color and petroleum-like odor, can cause foaming in water [6].…”

“…From this study, the salinity ranges between 2.13-2.17%o. This gradient was not in conformity with the situation obtainable by [29]. The salinity values were also within the [15] guideline set for the maximum tolerable limit of salinity for brackish water.…”

“…According to [28], the concentration and relative abundance of ions in waters is highly variable and depends mainly on the nature of the bedrock, precipitation, and evaporation crystallization processes. It is also known to show some correlation with water conductivity [16,29] recommends that water containing more than 2000 mg L -1 of dissolved solids should not be used if other less mineralized supplies are available.…”
