This study aimed to assess antihyperlipidemic, cardiac and antioxidant effects as well as mode of actions of Musa paradisiaca (M. paradisiaca) leaf and fruit peel hydroethanolic extracts in nicotinamide (NA)/streptozotocin (STZ)‐induced diabetic rats. Experimental diabetes mellitus was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ (60 mg/kg body weight), 15 min after intraperitoneal injection of NA (120 mg/kg body weight). NA/STZ‐induced diabetic rats were orally supplemented with M. paradisiaca leaf and fruit peel hydroethanolic extracts in a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight/day for 28 days. The treatment of NA/STZ‐induced diabetic rats with M. paradisiaca leaf and fruit peel extracts significantly decreased the elevated fasting and post‐prandial serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL‐cholesterol and vLDL‐cholesterol levels and significantly increased the lowered serum insulin level, liver glycogen content, serum HDL‐cholesterol level, homeostasis model assessment‐insulin resistance (HOMA‐IS) and HOMA‐β cell function. The elevated cardiovascular risk indices in diabetic rats were significantly improved due to treatment with M. paradisiaca extracts. Concomitant with the increase in liver glycogen content, the glucose‐6‐phosphatase activity significantly decreased reflecting the decrease in hepatic glucose output. The heart function was potentially ameliorated as manifested by decrease in the elevated serum creatine kinase‐MB, lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase activities after treatments of diabetic rats with M. paradisiaca extracts. The elevated liver lipid peroxidation and the decline in liver glutathione content and superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione‐S‐transferase activities were significantly reversed by treatments. Thus, it can be concluded that M. paradisiaca leaf and fruit peel hydroethanolic extracts may have antihyperlipidemic and cardioprotective potentials in NA/STZ‐induced diabetic rats. These effects may be mediated via improvements in the glycemic state, β‐cell function, tissue insulin sensitivity, and antioxidant defense mechanism.

Background: Musa sapientum, commonly known as banana, is an herbaceous plant of the Musaceae family. Copper-based nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) enhance the scavenging capacity of various antioxidants and improve the treatment of ROS-related diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of banana stem mediated copper nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: Banana stems weighing 200 grams were cut into small pieces. These fragments were powdered and mixed with 200 cc of sterile distilled water in a blender. CuCl2H2O (0.5 mmol, 5 mL) was applied to ethanol, and the reaction mixture was allowed to react with 1 M NaOH while stirring. Cu-Nps and the prepared banana stem extract were mixed together. The DPPH assay was used to investigate the antioxidant activity of banana stem mediated Cu-Nps. The percent inhibition values were determined using the formula after the absorbance values were measured with a UV spectrophotometer. Results: At the highest concentration used in the study, the antioxidant activity of banana stem mediated Cu-Nps was 88.10 percent and that of vitamin C was 92.15 percent. This demonstrated that Cu- Nps mediated by banana stems have a concentration-dependent antioxidant effect. Conclusion: The antioxidant activity of banana stem mediated Cu- Nps tested here was higher than the standard antioxidant drug vitamin c in lower concentration. In higher concentration, vitamin c standard showed higher antioxidant activity.

The presence of residual endogenous quality-related fruit and vegetable enzymes in either raw or processed fruit or vegetable products may cause loss of quality during processing or storage. The content and properties of such enzymes in these raw sources vary widely with type, species, and variety of the sources and the nature of the environment in which they grew. This study was carried out to determine the optimum conditions (pH and temperature) and total initial activities of three quality-related oxidative enzymes [peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and lipoxygenase, (LOX)] in three fruit varieties; mango (Mangifera indica var. Zebda), banana (Musa cavendishii var. Enana), (peel and pulp), olive (Olea europaea var. Picual) and three vegetables; green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris var. Littel Marvel), tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum var. Marmand), cucumber (Cucumis sativus var. Ria) grown in Egypt. The POD, PPO and LOX activities were detected in the six examined homogenates. The optimum pH and temperature values for high enzyme activities were varied according to the type of fruits and vegetables. The highest amount of POD was found in green beans extract (0.207 unit mg-1 protein of the sample) and the lowest amount was for banana peel (0.087 unit mg-1 protein). However, the green beans extract had the lowest content of PPO. In contrast, the highest content was for banana peel. For LOX activity, the mango extract exhibited the greater extent (0.249 unit mg-1 protein) than cucumber and tomato extracts (0.228 and 0.211 unit mg-1 protein, respectively). The activity of LOX was very low in the crude banana pulp homogenate (0.068 unit mg-1 protein).
