The Stevenson screen has previously been used for ground temperature and humidity observations, but due to the computerization and miniaturization of observation equipment, a solar radiation shield has been more commonly employed in recent years. However, there is no detailed domestic standard for Stevenson screens or solar radiation shields in weather stations or weather observatories. Accordingly, this study was conducted to derive the required standard for solar radiation shields by comparing the temperature and humidity observations of a Stevenson screen and a solar radiation shield in Korea. Through these comparisons, the minimal standard requirements for solar radiation shields were determined. First, a solar radiation shield with natural ventilation should have a structure in which the inside (sensor) is not directly transmitted from the outside through a method such as a partition wall inside the plate. Second, in the case of forced ventilation, the structure fixing the ventilation fan must be firmly fixed. Moreover, there should be no interference between the installed sensor and the solar radiation shield. The natural ventilation method and the forced ventilation method showed similar results.

High-quality time series of meteorological observations are required for reliable assessments of climate trends. To analyze inhomogeneities in time series, parallel measurements can be used. Germany's national meteorological service DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst) operates a network of climate reference stations. At these stations, manual and automatic observations have been taken in parallel. These parallel measurements therefore allow analyzing the impact of the transition on the homogeneity of time series of several meteorological parameters. Here, we present results for temperature. The differences between automatic and manual measurements are tested on breakpoints caused by instrumental defects or changes in the measurement conditions. The time series are highly correlated such that small breaks can be identified. The detected breakpoints are verified against metadata if available. In the case of no available metadata information, a procedure is suggested to identify the inhomogeneous time series (manual or automatic time series). Afterwards, the time series are homogenized. The homogenized time series are used to analyze the impact of changing the observing system from manual to automatic measurements on daily mean temperature.

Accuracy of daily extreme air temperatures under natural variations in thermometer screen ventilation

Accurate air temperatures underpin environmental research. Most professional meteorological air temperature measurements still expose thermometers within traditional, naturally ventilated screens. Their representation of true air temperature depends on screen airflow, and therefore local winds. Accuracies of daily maximum (Tmax) and minimum (Tmin) air temperatures are assessed by comparison between a naturally ventilated large conventional screen and a co‐located aspirated reference screen. In over 1200 days' data, the naturally ventilated Tmin and Tmax both showed small (median < 0.06°C) cold bias, but, in 1% of cases, warm Tmax bias and cold Tmin bias >|1°C|. The Tmin cold bias is associated with calm clear nights, and the Tmax warm bias events with calm winter days at low sun angles, allowing solar heating of the screen. The prevalence of poor natural ventilation, potentially affecting Tmin and Tmax, is estimated across European sites. Poor ventilation occurred at Tmin for 12% of values, and at Tmax for 4%. Climatological averaging will reduce these effects, but, without corroborating wind data, statistical changes in Tmin or Tmax, including identifying “Tropical Nights” (Tmin > 20°C) or occurrences of winter extremes, may have limited value. Wider adoption of aspirated thermometer screens, with an initial overlap period, will largely eliminate these effects.
