Aspects of the biology of trap caught Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacepede), 1803 from the New Calabar River, Nigeria

Abstract: Length and weight measurements of a population of 513 specimens of trap-caught Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus harvested between January and July (excluding May), 2010 were analyzed using the following softwares; FiSAT (Fish Stock Assessment Tool) and Popdyn JFB.xls. Results of the sampled population gave a total length range of 18 to 95 cm, L max (113.8 cm), L∞ (116.8 cm), L m (60 cm), L opt (75.9 cm), and weight; 100 to 12,000 g indicating the promising nature of this trap fishery to make significant contributio… Show more

“…The vegetation present in the area is the red mangrove Rhizophora mangles and white mangrove Laguncularia racemose. Some of the dominant fish families in this ecosystem include the Lutjanidae, Clupeidae, Cichlidae, and the Claroteidae, but the most abundant are the Claroteidae (silver catfish) and Cichlidae (tilapias) [9]. Whereas the tidal mudflats species include the gobies, periwinkles, crabs, and mudskippers, only to mention a few.…”

“…The New Calabar River (Figure 1) and its tributaries are all located in Rivers State. It is a low lying deltaic river which rises at approximately latitude 5°10'N and longitudes 6°50'E near Elele-Alimini and flows Southward for roughly 150km before its discharge into the Atlantic Ocean at about latitudes 4°20'N and longitudes 7°00'E (Francis and Elenwo, 2012). It occupies a low relief region, ranging from 0-50m above sea level at the low zone, to 50-100 above sea level at its source.…”

“…Thus, the fishery is exploited by artisanal fisherfolks, and it is characterized by the use of different types of traditional fishing gear. These include pipe and drum traps, gills, and cast nets, while the craft in use is an unmotorized dugout canoe and paddle (Francis and Elewuo 2012). The upper reach of the New Calabar River is rich in C. nigrodigitatus broodfish (Uzukwu et al 2014).…”
