Aspects of leucocyte migration in the plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L.

Abstract: Histological studies on plaice tissues revealed mononuclear phagocytes emigrating through capillary endothelium in response to bloodborne foreign erythrocytes, with a z 50% increase in circulating leucocytes within 2 h. Despite this rapid influx of leucocytes, cellular accumulation during peritoneal inflammatory responses was significantly slower than in mammals. In v i m studies with chemotaxis chambers revealed that random leucocyte migration was enhanced in the presence of endogenous chemostimulatory substa… Show more

“…Ishii 1985). These products have subsequently been found also to enhance chemotactic migration of human and monkey eosinophils (Horii, Matsuoka & Owhashi 1986), The leucocytes of fish, such as those of plaice and rainbow trout, have also been shown to exhibit increased chemotactic responses to host derived chemoattractants (Griffin 1984;MaeArthur, Thomson & Fletcher 1985;Sharp et al 1991) and chemokinetic responses following contact with parasite derived antigens (Nash, Fletcher & Thomson 1986;Sharp et al 1991).…”

“…In an attempt to upregulate innate immunity related protein gene expression, rainbow trout were injected intraperitoneally with 1·5 mg kg 1 of Escherichia coli LPS (Sigma, MO, U.S.A.) (MacArthur et al, 1985). Three h later the head kidneys, weighing 1·5-1·8 g, were collected from four rainbow trout.…”

“…Addition of 10-50 g LPS ml 1 for 24 or 48 h is also optimal to increase rainbow trout macrophage O 2 production (Jang et al, 1995b). In addition, injection of LPS enhances migratory activity of plaice, Pleuronectes platessa, splenic macrophages (MacArthur et al, 1985), and induces colony-stimulating activity (for head kidney macrophages) in rainbow trout serum (Kodama et al, 1994).…”
