The essential oil of Eugenia uniflora has been attributed anti-depressive, antinociceptive, antileishmanial, larvicidal, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. It is known that the cultivation of this plant can be affected by seasonality, promoting alteration in the oil composition and its biological activities. This study aims to perform the annual evaluation of the curzerene-type oil of E. uniflora and determine its antioxidant activity. The oil yield from the dry season (1.4 ± 0.6%) did not differ statistically from that of the rainy season (1.8 ± 0.8%). Curzerene, an oxygenated sesquiterpene, was the principal constituent, and its percentage showed no significant difference between the two periods: dry (42.7% ± 6.1) and rainy (40.8 ± 5.9%). Principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses presented a high level of similarity between the monthly samples of the oils. Also, in the annual study, the yield and composition of the oils did not present a significant correlation with the climatic variables. The antioxidant activity of the oils showed inhibition of DPPH radicals with an average value of 55.0 ± 6.6%. The high curzerene content in the monthly oils of E. uniflora suggests their potential for use as a future phytotherapeutic alternative.

12The use of plants and their products for medical treatment is very common 13 procedure in Brazil, especially for treatment of diabetes. In fact, several plants can 14 demonstrate hypoglycemic effects in vitro assays. However, the use for human 15 treatment requires the knowledge of their toxicological properties. The aim of this study 16 was to evaluate the effect of protein extracts of Chrysobalanus icaco collected from 17 natural habitats and of Eugenia astringens acquired from the market of Rio de Janeiro 18 on the viability and migration of fibroblasts. E. astringens has a similar morphology as 19 C. icaco and it is sold as Chrysobalanus in a popular market in Rio de Janeiro. Being a 20 different plant, E. astringens expresses different proteins, and its protein extract has 21 proved to possess higher toxic properties than C. icaco does. Cytotoxicity assays 22 indicated that, as the protein extract concentration increases, fibroblast viability 23 decreases. Only the E. astringens extract displayed cytotoxicity at all concentrations, in 24 addition to reduced fibroblast migration. The results obtained in this study demonstrates 25 that it's necessary integrative policies for rational use of medicinal plants and their 26 commercialization, since the current use of medicinal plants may be inadequate and it is 27 of great importance for Public Health. 28

Resumo: Buscou-se analisar o efeito de alguns fitoterápicos na prevenção e tratamento de doenças cardiovasculares, em especial na hipertensão arterial sistêmica. Foi realizado uma revisão de literatura na biblioteca virtual LILACS, Scielo, Google Acadêmico, e Pubmed, referentes aos anos de 1990 a 2016. Foram encontrados e descritos 5 fitoterápicos. A fitoterapia é muito utilizada, porém muito sem fundos científicos, desta forma mais estudos são necessários para comprovação da eficiência dos mesmos.Palavras-chave: Fitoterapia, Prevenção De Doenças, Hipertensão. The Herbal use in Reducing and Tratament of HypertensionAbstract: To examine the effect of some herbal remedies in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, especially in hypertension. We performed a literature review in the virtual library LILACS, Scielo, Google Scholar and Pubmed for the years 1990 to 2016. Results and Discussion: found and described 5 herbal medicines. The herbal medicine is widely used but many without scientific backgrounds, thus more studies are needed to prove the efficiency. Devido à alta prevalência de hipertensão e doenças cardíacas, a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), tem estimulado o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas que priorizam a utilização de plantas medicinais no tratamento de doenças, e enfatiza a necessidade de novas pesquisas feitas com plantas e produtos naturais (MARMITT et al., 2016).
