The State of Maranhão comprises the second largest coastline in Brazil. Nonetheless, few floristic surveys on restinga vegetation have been performed in Northeastern Brazil. This study aimed to survey floristic in a restinga of Maranhão, and to assess its similarity to other restingas in the states of Pará and Piauí. Botanical specimens were sampled at Sítio Aguahy, in the municipality of São José de Ribamar, along the eastern coast of Maranhão between June/2012 and October/2013. Species identification and life forms classification followed the usual methods employed in floristic studies. Similarities in plant composition of six sites were estimated based on cluster analysis through Bray-Curtis distance. In the studied area, we found 116 phanerogamic species, 100 genera and 52 families; 19 species were new occurrences for the restinga of Maranhão. Families with largest number of species were Fabaceae, Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae, Poaceae, Myrtaceae, Asteraceae, Malvaceae, Combretaceae, and Eriocaulaceae, which comprised 49.2% of all sampled species. We identified 41 nanophanerophytes, 34 terophytes, 15 camephytes, ten microphanerophytes, six hemicryptophytes, and five lianas. Similarity analyses indicated greater affinity between the restinga flora from the states of Maranhão and Pará than that observed for the states of Maranhão and Piauí, suggesting that the process of species colonization in the former is more likely derived from the Amazon Forest. It is expected that these results may encourage future researchers to conduct further surveys in restinga areas of the Maranhão aiming to better understand the influence of neighboring vegetation on the colonization of the coastal areas of Maranhão. Riqueza de espécies em uma restinga no leste do Maranhão, Nordeste do Brasil RESUMOO Estado do Maranhão possui o segundo maior litoral da costa brasileira. No entanto, poucos levantamentos florísticos foram realizados nas áreas de restinga no Nordeste do Brasil. O presente estudo teve como objetivo realizar um levantamento florístico em uma área de restinga no Maranhão e analisar a similaridade com a flora das restingas dos Estados do Pará e do Piauí. As coletas botânicas foram realizadas na restinga do Sítio Aguahy, município de São José de Ribamar, na porção oriental da Ilha do Maranhão, no período de junho de 2012 a outubro de 2013. A identificação das espécies e a classificação das formas de vida seguiu a metodologia usual em estudos florísticos. A similaridade foi realizada através de análise de cluster a partir da distância de Bray-Curtis, onde foram considerados seis estudos. -(The coastal restinga vegetation of Pará, Brazilian Amazon: a synthesis) The present article reviews studies (some unpublished) of the vegetation of coastal sandy soils (restinga) along the coast of Pará State, northern Brazil. A total of 411 higher plant species are reported; Fabaceae, Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae and Myrtaceae are the most species-rich families. Nearly half of the restinga species (48%) are terrestrial herbs; palms, trees and shrubs account for 39% of the species, the remainder being lianas and epiphytes. Species are frequently wide-spread and occur in coastal areas of Southeastern Brazil as well as at inland sites in the Amazon region. Only two species appear to be exclusively coastal; whereas other species appear to exhibit a preference for sandy soils. Plant assemblages are commonly classified by means of "formations" associated with certain habitats but current data do not allow the description of well-defined plant associations. The species composition at different sites along the Pará coast does not show any clear regional grouping pattern. Seasonal changes in the composition of restinga vegetation are most probably linked to variation in ground water level. Restinga forest is mostly low and open; among the dominant tree species are Humiria balsamifera Aubl., Pouteria ramiflora (Mart.) Radlk., Anacardium occidentale L., Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth, and Tapirira guianensis Aubl.Key words -coastal forest, dune vegetation, sandy coastal plain RESUMO -(Vegetação de restinga do Estado do Pará, Amazônia Brasileira: uma síntese). Este artigo apresenta uma revisão dos estudos (alguns não publicados) da vegetação de restinga da costa do Estado do Pará, na região norte do Brasil. Ao todo foram registradas 411 espécies de plantas vasculares, sendo as famílias Fabaceae, Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae e Myrtaceae as mais ricas em espécies. Dentre as espécies da restinga, 48% são ervas terrestres, 39% são palmeiras, árvores e arbustos, sendo o restante constituído por lianas e epífitas. As espécies são amplamente distribuídas ocorrendo inclusive em ambientes costeiros de outras regiões brasileiras, como a região sudeste, assim como em ambientes não costeiros da Amazônia. Apenas duas espécies parecem ser exclusivamente costeiras, já outras espécies parecem ter preferência por ambientes de solo arenoso em geral. Diferentes associações de plantas são descritas e agrupadas em diferentes tipos de "formações vegetais" associadas à certos habitats, mas os dados da literatura não permitem identificar com precisão tais associações em toda a costa. Análises estatísticas mostraram que a distribuição das espécies ao longo da costa não apresentam nenhum padrão de agrupamento. Mudanças na composição da vegetação de restinga nas estações seca e chuvosa são mais provavelmente ligadas à variação do nível do lençol freático. The Restinga forests of southern Bahia state, Brazil, grow on sandy coastal Quaternary sediments. As their floras are relatively poorly known, the present study assessed their floristic compositions. We surveyed four sites at Maraú and Itacaré and identified 302 angiosperm species belonging to 184 genera of 75 families. The most species rich families were: Fabaceae (35 species), Myrtaceae (25), Rubiaceae (21), Sapotaceae (13), Bromeliaceae (12), Annonaceae (11), Erythroxylaceae (10), Melastomataceae (9), and Apocynaceae (8). Local floras include elements with distributions restricted to the Atlantic Forest domain, those disjunct between the Amazon and Atlantic Forest domains, and those also occurring in moist forests and dry vegetation of central Brazil. The hypothesis that the floristic compositions of restinga forests are influenced by neighboring wet forests was tested using cluster and principal component analyses of eleven restinga forests and nine Atlantic wet forest sites. The results supported five main groups, with most of them including both restinga forests and their adjacent wet forest sites, thus corroborating the hypothesis that wet forests in geographical proximity greatly influence the floristic compositions of restinga forests. Key-word: coastal vegetation, Atlantic Forest domain, flora, similarity. ResumoAs florestas de Restinga do baixo-sul da Bahia, Brasil, encontram-se sobre sedimentos arenosos do Quaternário costeiro. Como sua flora é relativamente pouco conhecida, o presente estudo avaliou sua composição florística. Foram inventariadas quatro áreas nos municípios de Maraú e Itacaré e identificadas 302 espécies de angiospermas, distribuídas em 184 gêneros e 75 famílias. As famílias mais ricas em espécies foram: Fabaceae (35 espécies), Myrtaceae (25), Rubiaceae (21), Sapotaceae (13), Bromeliaceae (12), Annonaceae (11), Erythroxylaceae (10), Melastomataceae (9) e Apocynaceae (8). A flora local inclui elementos de distribuição restrita à Mata Atlântica, disjunta entre Amazônia e Mata Atlântica e florestas úmidas e a vegetação seca do Brasil central. A hipótese de que a composição florística das florestas de Restinga é influenciada pelas florestas pluviais geograficamente próximas foi testada usando análises de agrupamento e de componentes principais com onze áreas de florestas de Restinga e nove de florestas pluviais da Mata Altântica. Os resultados sustentaram cinco grupos principais, a maioria incluindo áreas de floresta de restinga e florestas pluviais adjacentes, corroborando a hipótese de que a proximidade geográfica aos estoques florísticos das florestas pluviais tem grande efeito na composição das florestas de Restinga.
