Asociación entre el coeficiente intelectual de niños de dos a cinco años y síntomas de ansiedad y depresión de los cuidadores

Abstract

To analyze the association between Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of children from two to five years of age and anxiety and depressive symptoms of caregivers. This study is from a positivist paradigm, quantitative approach of correlational type; this is a non-experimental design and a cross sectional study. The sample was conformed by 186 caregivers, ages ranging from 28 to 68-years-old (M = 45.16), and 186 children, ages ranging from 2 to 5-years-old (M = 4.40). The following instruments were used: a scale to measure the IQ of children, a sociodemographic questionnaire, a scale to measure depressive symptoms and another to measure trait anxiety in adults. The data analysis was carried out using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) V. 20. The mean IQ in the sample was 80.4. Caregivers did not show high depressive symptoms levels or trait anxiety. The results of the linear regression indicated that the mental health of the caregivers is not related to the IQ of preschool boys and girls.
