Asian Consensus Report on Functional Dyspepsia

Abstract: Background/AimsEnvironmental factors such as food, lifestyle and prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection are widely different in Asian countries compared to the West, and physiological functions and genetic factors of Asians may also be different from those of Westerners. Establishing an Asian consensus for functional dyspepsia is crucial in order to attract attention to such data from Asian countries, to articulate the experience and views of Asian experts, and to provide a relevant guide on management of… Show more

“…H. pylori is a microaerophilic gram negative spiral bacillus that infects the gastric mucosa in 20-80% of humans throughout the world and this bacteria was reported to be the major pathologic agent in the development of FD. Prevalence of H. pylori infection in FD patients varies from 30-80% (Vilaichone et al, 2011;Miwa et al, 2012). The study published in 2012 demonstrated that the DQB1*0401 genotype was related to a higher risk of H. pylori infection (Zhao et al, 2012).…”

“…A cumulative gain over time was shown, with a 25% reduction in medical visits due to dyspeptic complaints in patients who had eradicated the bacteria (89) . H pylori eradication in patients with functional dyspepsia is now a consensus recommendation established by leading experts in different regions of the world (132,141,192,207) .…”

“…Having said that, the economic data reported in this study, and from other recent US-based studies, 2 may have little global relevance. FD is equally prevalent in the East, 3 but economic data remains sparse. A recent population-based study in South East Asia reported an estimated annual cost for uninvestigated dyspepsia of US $14 816.00 and US $59 282.20 per 1000 population in a rural and urban setting respectively.…”
