aThis study aimed at determining the chemical composition of bio-oil from giant cane (Arundo donax L.), as well as its performance as a wood preservative. The performance was determined through water absorption, tangential swelling, and resistance to fungi and termites. Biooil was obtained by pyrolysis at 450 to 525 ºC. The yield of liquid, char, and gas was determined to be 45, 30, and 25%, respectively. The most abundant chemical compounds found in the bio-oil were acids, ketones, furans, benzenes, phenols, sugars, and guaiacols. Scots pine sapwood was impregnated with the obtained bio-oil at concentrations of 10 and 20%. Additionally, treated samples were impregnated with epoxidized linseed oil to study its effect on bio-oil leachability. The retention of the giant cane bio-oil was in the range of 50 to 100 kg m -3. Leached samples were exposed to white-and brown-rot fungi, according to European standard EN 113. Wood impregnated with only cane oil demonstrated a durability that classifies the treatment as very effective (mass loss less than 3%). Epoxidized linseed oil treatment significantly reduced water absorption of the treated samples with bio-oil and further improved the durability. A termite test showed that bio-oil was also effective against Reticulitermes flavipes.

The anatomical structure of plants is largely varied according to genetics as well as the environmental conditions. The present study aims to describe the anatomical features of three species of family Poaceae growing naturally in canal bank habitat namely: Arundo donax, Pennisetum setaceum and Saccharum spontaneum. These plants are referred as medicinal, grazing or fiber producing plants. Samples were obtained from the canal banks in Nile delta of Egypt. The samples were fixed in formalin-acetoalcohol and cross sections were prepared, examined using full automatic Olympus microscope and photographed at different power. In the present study, regarding leaves, the general appearance of the leaves sections showed either flat or V-shaped blade. The leaf blades of the three plants show a typical monocot organization. The mesophyll cells showed no distinct differentiation into palisade or spongy tissue. In P. setaceum and S. spontaneum, the leaves have distinct bulliform cells which enable the leaf to fold or roll. The vascular bundles of leaves are collateral, closed, numerous and diffuse in distribution. The vascular bundles are larger in size and surrounded by a sheath of fibers. However, the cross-section of the stem is more or less circular. Ground tissue is parenchymatous and not differentiated into cortex and pith in P. setaceum and S. spontaneum, while A. donax has large hollow pith. The bundles are collateral and are usually surrounded by a sclerenchymatous sheath.

Abstract:Wood from the leguminous tree, Leucaena diversifolia, was subjected to hydrothermal treatment (autohydrolysis) at 160 to 180 ºC and 0 to 30 min. followed by ethanol-soda-anthraquinone delignification. The liquid phase contained 18.65 g of sugars per liter, and the solid phase had a gross heating value of 19.083 MJ/kg, but could also be uses as a source of cellulose pulp for the production of paper with tear, burst and tensile indexes of 2.4 Nm2/kg, 2.6 MPam2/kg and 40.7 KNm/kg respectively. Leucaena diversifolia lends itself readily to valorization for energy production, and also to integral, fractional exploitation by autohydrolysis and ethanol-soda-anthraquinone delignification, which can additionally bring environmental benefits to cropping zones.
