Artificial ureteral calculosis in rats: behavioural characterization of visceral pain episodes and their relationship with referred lumbar muscle hyperalgesia

Abstract: In a rat model of artificial ureteral calculosis, the aim of the study was to characterize the behavioural manifestations of direct visceral pain and to evaluate the relationship between number, duration and complexity of the visceral episodes and the extent of referred lumbar muscular hyperalgesia. As evidenced by non-stop video-tape recordings over 4-14 days, almost 98% of stone-implanted rats showed episodes similar to the writhing behaviour characteristic of noxious visceral stimulation in animals. From on… Show more

“…Several factors may account for our findings including the time course of the visceral stimulus, the type of inflammatory agent used, and the site of visceral stimulus (colon vs. bladder/uterus). Previous studies tested somatic hypersensitivity within hours after introduction of an inflammatory or nociceptive agent into the viscera [11,30,34]. We tested animals up to 4 weeks following the induction of colitis.…”

“…The best characterized and currently most widely used model was developed by Giamberadino and colleagues (Giamberardino et al 1990(Giamberardino et al , 1995. In a surgical procedure, 20 ll of liquid dental cement is injected into the upper-third of one ureter.…”

“…Vocalizations during injections were recorded. Writhes, characterized as abdominal stretching (for reference, see Giamberardino et al, 1995), were observed 15 min after acetic acid treatment for 30 min. Number of writhes and total time spent writhing (measured to the 10th of a second using a stopwatch) during the observation period were recorded.…”
